Winner: The Land of Nod

Edith Wharton’s insistence that nurseries should be decorated with the same care as formal areas of the house has received a good deal of criticism in the more than a century since the publication of her book The Decoration of Houses. Browsing The Land of Nod would convince even the staunchest critic that she was right. Good design and high quality are key to the classic, vaguely nostalgic yet practical Land of Nod furniture collections. It may not be the cheapest place to shop, but you’ll treasure the pieces you buy here for years — maybe even for generations.

Finalists

It’s not always possible — or even desirable — to buy all your kids’ furniture retail. You never know exactly what will be available at a Just Between Friends’ semiannual consignment sale, but you have a pretty good chance of finding what you need. The sales are organized like a retail store, and Just Between Friends checks all products against recall and safety standards before consignors are allowed to sell them, at prices usually from 50 percent to 90 percent off retail prices.

For many of you, Pottery Barn has been a favorite source for furniture since you graduated from Goodwill, so naturally, now that you’re parents, you turn to Pottery Barn Kids for your kids’ rooms. Pottery Barn Kids has the same clean, relaxed style as its grown-up counterpart. Personalization through monogramming and upholstery options are especially appreciated in spaces as intimate as the nursery. White-glove delivery service, which includes furniture assembly and packing-material cleanup, is not cheap, but it takes all the stress out of setting up a new baby’s room.

South Sound families love Rhea Lana's Consignment Event for all things kid-related and nursery and kids’ furniture is no exception. Daydreams of an impeccably decorated nursery can evaporate for many families once they take a look at retail prices, but Rhea Lana's Consignment Events can make those fantasies real with gently used pieces from high-end sources. Sales are held seasonally in locations across the state; stay tuned for Tacoma’s fall sale details.

Sugar Babies in Sumner is an upscale, stylish baby and children’s boutique, offering trendy baby clothes in person and online. But our readers love it best for its nursery furniture with reasonable prices and classic designs in white and stained wood that will continue to look good as your child ages. Accessories, bedding and Moses baskets round out the selection.
