2018 Golden Teddy Awards — Camps + Classes

Wilderness Awareness School

Awesome Overnight Camp

Winner: Wilderness Awareness School

With its frequent appearances across camps and classes categories over the years, we know you think Wilderness Awareness School absolutely rocks. You love that your kids foster a connection to nature while acquiring practical skills, such as tracking and recognizing edible plants. “The counselors and the program completely engaged my son,” according to one mom’s testimonial. “For a high-energy boy, he embraced learning to be quiet and observant in the woods.”

Finalists

Your votes for South Puget Sound’s Camp Gallagher speak to how much you appreciate these confidence-building overnight camps for middle school and high school kids. Campers not only engage in classic summer-camp activities like boating and crafting, they also practice leadership by planning their own group excursions. “No better place to relax and enjoy being unplugged so you can play with your kids!” wrote in one Golden Teddy voter.

When a camp begins with a two-hour, fun-filled “Da Boata” ride to its Vashon Island locale, it’s easy to see why campers adore Camp Sealth — Camp Fire of Central Puget Sound. Campers can attend Classic Camp, Horse Camp or an array of specialty camps, including Nocturnal Camp, during which campers stay up all night and sleep all day.

Your votes showed serious love for the Girl Scouts of Western Washington’s many camp options, noting how its programs impart a major girl-power message to your tweens and teens. Choices include day or overnight camps, a huge slate of interesting specialty camps, horse camps and leadership camps at locales that include a facility on Carnation’s Tolt River and a camp located on a saltwater beach on Hood Canal.

Parents and kids alike rave about the gorgeous locations of the YMCA’s Camp Orkila and Camp Seymour. Still, it’s the transformative experiences offered at those camps that keep kids coming back for more. As one participant says, “Before camp, I did not understand how people can say a few days at camp entirely changed them as a person.”
