Ask "Happiest" author Dr. Karp your burning questions

Published on: December 30, 2013

0110_harvey_karpDr. Harvey Karp, the man many new parents credit for keeping them sane with his “5 S’s” for soothing babies and inducing better sleep, is coming to Seattle Sept. 15 to share his wisdom with local families and child-care professionals. Karp is the bestselling author of “The Happiest Baby on the Block” and “The Happiest Toddler on the Block,” and is working on a new book set to publish in May 2012 focusing on sleep (now there's a topic we can all embrace).

If you can’t spend the evening with Dr. Karp -- or even if you plan to -- we want to give you an opportunity to ask him some of your burning questions about how to raise your happiest baby or toddler. We'll collect your questions in the comments section below, and Dr. Karp will answer a selection of them that we will publish on our website.

In “The Happiest Baby on the Block,” Karp helps parents conquer fussiness and colic by using “The Calming Reflex” to stop a baby’s crying. He teaches the 5 S’s to trigger the reflex: swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking. His says his “Cuddle Cure” soothes even the most colicky babies and adds hours to their sleep.

In “The Happiest Toddler on the Block,” Karp likens testy toddlers to cavemen and instructs parents to treat tantrums accordingly. He teaches “Toddler-ese” to combat meltdowns and teach even 1-year-olds to be patient. He also details “foolproof” ways to encourage good toddler behavior.

Karp will speak at the Red Lion Hotel in Seattle at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. The lecture will benefit Postpartum Support International Washington. Tickets are $20/single or $35/couple, and are available at brownpapertickets.com. (Nice to know: Babes in arms are OK.)

So tell us -- what questions can Dr. Karp answer for you?
