National Doughnut Day Sprinkles Sweetness Around Seattle

Where to mark National Doughnut Day in delicious fashion at local (and national) doughnut outlets

Published on: June 01, 2017

A special holiday for doughnuts? We are totally on board. It's National Doughnut Day on Friday, June 2, and some local shops are offering sweet deals and other fun. So whether some afternoon sugar will provide the pick-me-up you need, or a frosting-covered bribe for the kiddos will get you a few moments of peace (they can't argue with doughnuts stuffed in their mouths, right?), here's where to go.

Local shop Mighty-O Donuts will sample mini doughtnuts all day at its three Seattle locations (Capitol Hill, Green Lake and Ballard). Purchase a dozen and hope for the golden ticket; if you find it, you'll win doughnuts for your school or office. Mighty-O also plans to donate a portion of the day's proceeds to three local elementary schools that are nearby their neighborhood shops (Lowell Elementary, Green Lake Elementary and Salmon Bay Elementary).

Tip: Check out the fun maritime parklet around the corner from Ballard's Mighty-O shop.

For its nod to National Doughnut Day, local doughnut purveyor Top Pot Hand-forged Doughnuts & Coffee is planning an afternoon fest at its flagship downtown shop on Friday, June 2. The party includes a performance by local kindie band Recess Monkey (3 p.m.) and a doughnut-eating contest. Show up before 3 p.m. to sign up for a chance to be one of the doughnut-stuffing contestants. Top Pot is also selling raffle tickets for $10 in support of Northwest Harvest. Raffle tickets are available at any of its shops (until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 2) and prizes include a pair of round-trip tickest to any Alaska Airlines destination, passes to Bumbershoot, Space Needle tix and more.

Frost marks the holiday by offering free samples of three finalists in its "design your dream doughnut" contest. Samples will be on offer at both its Bellevue and Mill Creek shops. Frost's eighth annual doughnut-eating contest takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at Frost's Mill Creek Town Center location. Want to enter? Aspiring doughnut gobblers must preregister in one of three age categories; ages 6–12, ages 13–17, and ages 18 and older. A winner from each age group will take home a $100 Frost gift card along with "eternal doughnut glory!"

Rodeo Donut, an off-shoot of Cupcake Royale, will offer its specialty doughnuts for sale in all six Cupcake Royale locations on Friday, June 2 (typically they're available only at the Ballard and Capital Hill cafes). Customers who purchase a Rodeo doughnut on National Doughnut Day will receive a free 12-ounce Stumptown coffee.

Original House of Donuts, a South Sound mainstay, offers free doughnuts (with a hole) to the first 1000 customers at its Lakewood, Tacoma and Puyallup locations on Friday, June 2. Don't be late — the Lakewood and Tacoma shops open at 6 a.m. and the Puyallup shop opens at 5 a.m.! Original House of Donuts will also be crowning a Donut Queen and giving away t-shirts and other prizes.

National chain Krispy Kreme offers a free doughnut to anyone at any of its shops in the U.S. or Canada for National Doughtnut Day. No purchase necessary.

We don't have any Dunkin' Donuts outlets here in the Northwest (why is that?), but alert your friends and relatives in other locales that Dunkin' is offering a free classic doughnut with the purchase of any beverage, at participating shops and while supplies last, on Friday, June 2.

Is your fave local doughnut shop doing something to mark National Doughnut Day? Or just want to give it a shout out? Post in the comments. Happy doughnut eating to all.
