Brooklyn duo The Pop Ups follow their award-winning debut CD Outside Voices with Radio Jungle, hot off a tour with Yo Gabba Gabba Live! Full of innovative, fun kiddie rock, Radio Jungle blends eclectic rock and pop sounds with a mellow world-music vibe. Think Manu Chao and the Kinks on a playdate. Catchy choruses and melodies will have toddlers to tweens singing along about numbers, crayons, and their favorite fruits.
While the disc played in my pre-K classroom, kids sculpting Play-Doh starting bobbing their heads and shaking their hips. By track number four, “Pop Up City,” one child declared The Pop Ups to be better than Justin Bieber and Drake — high praise indeed! Radio Jungle strikes that rare balance between kid music and indie rock that adults can enjoy, too. This album will be your new soundtrack to Sunday afternoon art time or the next preschool birthday party.
The album’s first single, “Connect the Stars,” is currently available on iTunes and the full album releases April 3. If you’re lucky enough to be in Brooklyn this spring, you can catch their show Radio Jungle: The Musical. Let’s hope they take the musical on tour!
