When I heard Oprah was going vegan, I nearly dropped my bacon cheeseburger. Imagine! No animal products for three weeks! Even more shocking: no caffeine, sugar, alcohol or gluten!
Welcome to the longest three weeks of your life, Oprah.
Here's a snippet from day one of her blog on the subject:
"Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. 'What's left?' I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes."
How does she do it? Three little words: Chef Tal Ronnen.
I'd like to say that my lack of a personal chef is what's keeping me from going vegan. Raising animals for meat is an incredibly environmentally destructive practice, according to a United Nations report.
I could probably do without the meat. I'd probably feel better without the cheese. But give up caffeine? Now that's just crazy talk.
