sweetcreamLast week we shared plenty of love for the new summer sweets cookbook, Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones. And, if the recipe for white chocolate raspberry swirl ice cream left your sweet tooth hankering for more, you're definitely in luck -- we've got one copy of this new ice cream tell-all to give away to one lucky reader!

Want to learn more about this delicious-cool new collection? Here's the full scoop on what tasty treats you can expect to find in Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones:

An irresistible guide to making 90 intensely flavorful handmade ice creams from the country's top artisanal ice cream shop, including the smash hits Salted Caramel and Balsamic Strawberry, plus other favorites.

San Francisco’s Bi-Rite Creamery is as well known for its small-batch, handcrafted, show-stoppingly inventive ice cream as it is for the long line that snakes around the block. Guests young and old flock to the destination ice cream shop, craving a toasty banana split, a jewel-toned ice pop, a scoop of cooling sorbet, a mouthwatering ice cream sandwich, or one of the best ice cream cakes around.

sweetcreamThe weather's finally getting warmer, and if you've been itching to make some cool sweets with your little ones this summer, you're in for quite the treat with Bi-Rite Creamery's new cookbook, Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones.

Including 90 recipes that are straight from the cold cases of their well-known San Francisco ice cream shop, owners Kris Hoogerhyde and Anne Walker divulge plenty of tips, tricks, and all of the dairy know-how needed to create the perfect summer sweets — from gourmet homemade ice cream to popsicles and granitas, ice cream cakes, and everything in between... This treat-filled collection is the next best thing to actually visiting the shop (and for those of us who don't live in San Francisco, thank goodness!).

First opening their doors in the Mission District across the street from their sister store Bi-Rite Market in December of 2006, the proprietors realized that they would have to sell 150 ice cream cones a day to stay afloat, calculating out to five cones every 30 minutes. Sounds like a lot of ice cream, right? They thought so too, and worried that this would surely be a major problem. However, volume sales turned out to be the least of their worries — and their concerns quickly shifted to how in the world they were going to keep up with the demand. In the introduction, they explain:

pastaThis pasta is the kids’ favorite. It’s called orecchiette, which I believe means “little ear,” because they are meant to look like tiny lamb’s ears. I try not to think about that too much, because who wants to eat a bowl of small ears?

I actually think they look like tiny cervical caps, which for some reason I find far less offensive. I thought I was alone in this, but Trader Joe’s ran out and when they restocked the little pasta ears, I frantically bought about 40 bags. While doing so, a woman appeared next to me and remarked on the large quantity of bags I was tossing into the cart. I told her they were beloved in my house, despite their resemblance to 1950′s contraception (I know cervical caps are still around, but they really do smack of climbing into a single bed with a head full of curlers), and she said, “Yes! My brother and I used to call them diaphragmini.” I loved this. Of course, we still call them orecchiette at home, because I have neither the time nor the stomach to get into a birth control discussion, but I still giggle every time I make them. (In this photo I am making some for school lunches.. which is part of the reason I haven’t divulged their contraceptive-resemblance to the kids. That’s one school phone call even I can’t handle.)

ParentMap's Linda Morgan sat down with King 5 News yesterday to discuss a topic that all parents can relate to -- how to tailor your parenting style to fit each of your children's temperaments. Many parents may believe that taking a "one-size-fits-all" approach is key when it comes to parenting more than one child, but it's best to remember that each child is born as a unique individual -- and that your older daughter's temeperament may vary drastically from your younger son's, or vice versa. Watch on for expert tips on how adjusting your parenting style can not only create a happier family dynamic for everyone, but how it can also create less stress, depression, and anxiety for each individual kid.

farmboat-lake-union-floating-market01If the sunny weather continues, tomorrow will be a standout day for visiting the FarmBoat Floating Market, a Thursday farmers market at Lake Union that's housed in a 125-foot historical steamboat, the Steamer Virginia V. The market is open each Thursday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Lake Union Park Wharf from May until December, and boasts a variety of local vendors with products such as specialty foods, organic fruits and veggies, gourmet cheeses, fresh flowers and artisan crafts.

If you're bringing your kids (and why wouldn't you?), plan some extra time to explore the historic vessel which doubles as a floating museum. The FarmBoat has revived the steamer, which was launched in 1922 to provide Seattle and Tacoma with fresh farm goods, and the classic vessel offers a fun learning experience for all ages with a look into the past at how our food was once locally transported. (FarmBoat is also currently developing various programs for inner-city youth that will provide maritime cultural education; stay tuned for future details.)

scary-mommy-cover_finalLast week, we featured a Q&A with Jill Smokler, the mastermind behind the new book and same-titled blog Confessions of a Scary Mommy. If, like us, you're a longtime follower of Smokler's every-charming and witty personal stories, we promise — you are going to love this book!

For new friends and followers, here's a brief synopsis of this must-read for mamas:

Confessions of a Scary Mommy is a collection of original essays that take an irreverent look at the underbelly of parenting — things most moms would never admit, but feel every day. Brutally honest and hysterically funny, Confessions will leave you feeling less alone in the sometimes overwhelming and exhausting world of motherhood. If you’re already a fan, lock the bathroom door on your whining kids, run a bubble bath, and settle in. If you’ve not encountered Scary Mommy before, break out a glass of champagne as well, because you’ll be toasting your initiation into a very select club.

Chapters cover everything from husbands (“If he could be carried around in a Baby Bjorn all day, he would.”) to other people’s kids (“Other people’s kids are just useless, bad influences who play no necessary role in our lives.”) to PTA fundraisers (“It brings out the worst in people…and who wants an overpriced roll of wrapping paper, anyway? How about something we actually want to buy? Alcohol, for instance.”) Each chapter begins with the best anonymous confessions from Smokler’s popular online Confessional.

Whether you’re a mom, a dad, a grandmother, a grandfather, an aunt, an uncle, a teacher, a godparent, or a teenager in need of birth control, Confessions of a Scary Mommy will be sure to leave you nodding your head in agreement and laughing out loud. (From Amazon.)
