When the Romans wrote their stories, they used all of the characters and many of the stories from Greek mythology, but they changed the names of the gods. We'll be working from the Roman versions in this class, by Jove! Magical transformations abound in these ancient stories, brought to life afresh by Seattle playwright Jennifer Dice ("Merry Maids of Nottingham," "Odysseus, or One Thing After Another"). Adventurous Arrietty belongs to an unusual race of tiny folks known as The Borrowers. They live underfoot and behind walls in the homes of unsuspecting “human beans,” borrowing the things they need to survive. When Arrietty encounters a human boy on her first borrowing expedition, she starts a chain of events that has the Borrowers running for their lives. Based on Norton’s classic children’s series, this is a story that provides action and theatrical delights, but also resonates with kids on the cusp of tween- and teenhood: Arietty loves her parents fiercely and needs their support, but wants a way of life different than theirs. Her voyage of discovery is a larger-than-life adventure you won’t want to miss!

Join SYT this summer as we learn to express our creative minds and bodies, develop theatrical passion, and explore the world around us through performance art! By each Friday, through the use of team collaboration, technique-based youth drama training, and our own collective imagination, students will create and present a piece which highlights the theatrical element of the week. Curriculum will vary each session, with a core focus of movement based creative drama. SYT supports families of all income levels. We will work to accommodate students regardless of ability to pay. The Explorer West Summer Arts Improvisation Camp - Theatre, Circus, Fine Arts, Dancing and Singing. The theme of our camp is improvisation and interconnected art. This is a two-week performing and fine arts camp and all students are welcome; you need not be an Explorer West student. During camp, students will explore dance, acting, circus arts, music, and fine arts in the theme of improvisation. How does a painting inspire a work of dance? How does a song inspire a scene? Students will create their own world of art in a camp that is designed for any skill level. Stage Struck has made a  loose and kid-friendly adaptation of this hugely popular musical based on the music of the 70?s pop group ABBA. This timeless story will come to life in this stage adaptation, which will feature songs from the classic film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This high energy musical will take campers on an amazing, fabulous, and sensational journey. Drama development through theater, games and process drama. Includes work with musical numbers, fairy tales, poetry and original material. Week culminates in performance on last day.

In this week-long drama camp, we will learn the tricks of the trade, from stage terms to make-up, costumes, and props. Campers will play improvisation and drama games, learn how to read a script with a discerning eye, and deliver lines with Oscar-worthy expression. With the help of experienced actors and drama teachers, we will put on a production of dramatic proportions.

In this one-week drama intensive we’ll use our voices, bodies and imaginations to bring to life classic fairytale creatures and characters. The class will culminate with a sharing for friends and family at 11 a.m. Friday.
