Do you hear that roar of the engines? Can you smell the sweet scent of jet fumes? Hurray! It’s that time of year again! The Blue Angels are back for another week of high flying excitement!

Calling all future engineers! This week we’ll be designing and building our own creations using Lego kits. We will learn about some of the difficulties that real engineers, like Leonardo da Vinci, faced and the solutions they created in making real machines.

Get ready to experiment! Join your fellow budding scientists as we become junior biologists, chemists, physicists, paleontologists, and geologists!

Explore the mysteries of deep space! Can you see a black hole? What is an event horizon? Do you think there are extraterrestrials on other planets out there? Learn about planets in far off solar systems and the life forms that might live there. Consider the existence of wormholes and other ‘far out’ ideas.

Camp FANTASTIC FLYING TOYS: Learn about aviation by playing with stomp rockets, rubber band-powered propeller planes, and mechanical birds. Make different paper airplanes and figure out which ones fly the farthest and glide the longest. Use flying toys from around the world like kites, boomerangs, taketombos and more.

See the world through the eyes of a pilot! Meet different pilots as they share their stories of flight with you. Follow the footsteps of famous aviators who have changed the world. Take a tour of a working airport to complete this amazing week-long experience.

Design Thinking Camp at Lake Washington Girls Middle School uses academic and artistic concepts side by side, to create a stimulating, project-based curriculum. Spend a week learning about concepts such as symmetry, balance, and form that are found naturally in both art and math. Use different art materials and mediums to reinforce these concepts with building and sculpture! At LWGMS we use "design thinking" strategies, such as prototyping, data analysis, and creative problem-solving to create artistic and engineering masterpieces. STEAM Camp is an exciting and hands-on learning opportunity for young people with a special emphasis on the STEAM curriculum areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). As educators, we must provide educational opportunities that endeavor to integrate the arts, sciences, and technology for this to happen. LWGMS already embraces this educational model, and is currently in the process of developing curriculum for our students that is cutting edge, and that integrates the arts into the STEM model: STEAM. STEAM design classes incorporate problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, presentation, prototyping, and response to critique (resilience). Camp Making Machines: (new in 2013) This week campers will learn to build simple machines using Lego Simple Machine kits. They will also explore how machines can be programmed to perform certain tasks using BeeBots.

Warm and cuddly or wet and scaly, Animal Explorers love them all! We’ll get to know our four legged (and finned) friends as we explore safari animals, rain-forest critters and sea life.

It’s time to say hello to the amazing world of robotics! Learn about the robots that you have in your home and use every day. Make different rovers that can pick up objects, complete an obstacle course, or engage in exciting tournaments.

This week we’ll put you in the cockpit of the Blackbird. The Museum is home to the only MD-21 left in the world and you can learn the secrets of a supersonic spy. Learn how to crack codes and send secret messages to help solve the mystery of the missing Museum moon rocks.

Camp Blast Off!: What does it take to get into space? Lots of rocket power! Test out different ‘rockets’ to see which ones will climb the highest. Design your custom space cruiser and then build it. Make and launch a different rocket each day.
