Excursions + diversions

Mach me
Tour the hottest mach-ing bird around - the Mach 3 Blackbird, the world's fastest piloted jet! This swoopy-cool stealth aircraft is on display, and you can tour it tip to tail -- under the guidance of knowledgeable docents -- at this annual winter break event. Free with admission: $7.50-$14, ages 4 and under free. All ages. The Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle. 206-764-5720. Through Jan. 4: Daily, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Just chillin'
Why, you ask? Because flinging your winter-white bod into a fffffreezing lake is ffffun! Well, Lake Washington's not technically freezing (50 degrees F), so I'm sure you're convinced. If you're not convinced (not Norwegian?), join me shoreside for hot drinks, a bonfire and mockery of the sopping. This year's Polar Plunge has a theme: "Freeze for a Reason" -- bring a donation for the local food bank. Marina Park, 25 Lakeshore Plaza Drive, Kirkland.  Free. All ages. (Seattleites, there's a Polar Plunge for you, too.) 425-587-3300. Thursday, Jan. 1 1 p.m.

Walky talky
Kick off 2009 with a non-competitive 6.2-mile walk with the Emerald City Wanderers through West Seattle neighborhoods. A 5K option is available for those who want a shorter walk, and strollers are OK.  It's free, but everyone must register before walking. Start at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 3050 California Ave. S.W., Seattle. All ages. 206-935-3225. Thursday, Jan. 1: Start between 9 a.m.-1 p.m., finish by 4 p.m.

Step aside, Liesl
I'm warming up my pipes for the big sing-along Sound of Music. Dress up as your favorite Von Trapp (lederhosen optional) and sing along (and boo the bad guys and cheer the good guys) with one of film's great musicals. The audience will vote for the best costume, and you'll get a goody bag filled with props to use at appropriate times during the action. $18-$25. Ages 5 and up. The 5th Avenue Theatre, 1308 Fifth Ave., Seattle. 206-292-ARTS. Friday, Jan. 2 7 p.m.; Saturday Jan. 3 2 p.m.

South of the border
Microsoft...Mexico...Redmond's got it all this week! Celebrate a cherished Mexican holiday tradition -- the Los Santos Reyes festival -- as part of the city's annual RedmondLights celebration. Events include live mariachi music, traditional Mexican dancing, a play for the kids depicting the story of Los Santos Reyes (the Three Kings) and regional Mexican food. Tickets are required for entry; pick up at the front desk of the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center (16600 N.E. 80th St.). Held at Redmond High School,  17272 N.E. 104th St., Redmond. Free. All ages. Note time change (the event was previously scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 3 at 5 p.m.): Sunday, Jan. 4 3 p.m.

Fine swine
Pot-bellied pigs do all sorts of tricks -- everything short of cooking the audience dinner. (Probably a good thing, unless you're partial to slops!) Valentine's Performing Pigs put on a funny, fascinating show for all ages. $3 at the door. All ages. Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle. 206-783-2244. Sunday, Jan. 4 10:30 a.m., noon

Cheap skate
An all-day skate session for winter break (bargain!). The arena advises that the schedule is subject to change without notice, so call to confirm before dropping by. Adults $6.50, ages 6-12 $5.50, skate rental $3. All ages. Highland Ice Arena, 18005 Aurora Ave. N., Shoreline. 206-546-2431. Thursday, Jan. 1 and Friday, Jan. 2 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
