Bug huggers
Take your lil' crawlies for a close look at water bugs! Examine live aquatic insects from local watersheds and learn about how they fit into the food chain. $5-$7. First graders and up. First, I would wish for world peace. Then, a jet pack! What would you do with three wishes? Ponder that as you watch Aladdin confront the question in SPROUTS Children's Theatre's comic musical adaptation of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Cry, wolf
Oh, Peter puts the hurt on that nasty wolf, but not before a lot of great music happens! The Seattle Symphony's classical music series for elementary-age kids features Peter and the Wolf. Get there early for activities in the lobby at 10 a.m., including an instrument petting zoo. $15-$20. Ages 5-12. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle. Hi, hi, birdy!
They're back! Celebrate the return of migratory birds that winter in South America, dahling. This cool event at the aquarium features kids' activities and demonstrations: Saturday -- 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., diving birds; 11 a.m., meet a bird biologist; 12:30 p.m., shorebirds. Sunday --- 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., diving birds; 11 a.m., meet a bird expert/learn about backyard habitats; 12:30 p.m., shorebirds. Free with admission: $10-$15, 3 and under free. All ages. Shroom school
It's Mushroom Maynia, an event so fab they've tossed in an extra "y!" Spend the day with your toadies, learning how to ID mushrooms, fascinating fungi facts, and more. Discover how to prepare tasty snacks, make spore prints, and use mushrooms in dyes and crayons. Free with admission: $8, $5 under 18, children 4 and under free. All ages. ...oh, wait. That's something else. This is the Clearwater School's first annual Whistlepig Music Fest and BBQ, featuring music from local bands 17th Chapter, Marmalade, and others.
