Griot riot
Actually, it's pronounced "gree-oh." Oh! Oodles o'griots - West African storytellers - will share their mad tale-spinning skillz at the Northwest African American Museum this month. Free. All ages. RSVP for groups larger than 10 people. Northwest African American Museum, 2300 S. Massachusetts St., Seattle. Thursdays, July 16 and 23rd, 11 a.m.-noon.

Slammin' jam
Teens: Channel that crazed energy into something that can win you cash and prizes! It's the "Go Green” Teen Poetry Slam. Come up with your own original environmental poem and recite (or read) it for the judges and an audience. (Hint: "Give a hoot - don't pollute" has already been done.) You could win a mountain bike, Visa gift card, and more. Free pizza and refreshments provided. All ages can attend; for poets ages 12-18. Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center, 5902 Lake Washington Blvd. S., Seattle. Friday, July 17, 6-8 p.m.

Go wedgies!
Not the underwear kind, silly; it's the Wedgwood Art Festival - a great place to take kids this Saturday. It includes a performance by Thistle Theater and five art activity stations for children, plus truly cool art and crafts by local artists on display and for sale. Musical performances by the 85th St Band, Dukes and a Diva, The Musician Emeritus Symphony Orchestra, Mostly Neighbors, and Deja Blue. Free. All ages. 8200 35th Ave. N.E., Seattle. Saturday, July 18, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Batter up
Ever wish you could fly? Here's your chance to "become" a bat without looking like a weirdo (more than usual, I mean!). The Urban Bat Peninsula Guided Nature Walk includes games and interpretive talks that teach batty survival skillz, like what to eat (insects: nom!), where and when to sleep, and when and where to hide. This hike has a difficulty level of "moderate" and will be 1.5 -2 miles long. $2-$4, under 5 free. Ages 4 and older. Seward Park Environmental and Audubon Center, 5902 Lake Washington Blvd. S., Seattle. Saturday, July 18, noon-1:30.

Mammal mashup
Take a few fairy tales and put 'em in a blender. Puree. Voila! Now you have Open Circle Theatre's newest show, Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf? -- a story (written by a local playwright) about a slightly out-of-control wolf who takes the narrator on a heck of a ride through various fairy tales. Free. All ages. Volunteer Park, 1247 15th Ave. E., Seattle. Saturdays and Sundays, July 18-Aug. 8, 2 p.m.

Just classic
Civilize your wild things with a little family-friendly classical music! The Seattle Chamber Music Society presents "Peter and the Wolf and Other Musical Tales," a 45-minute program for families. The performance includes audience participation and colorful props...and free hot dogs and lemonade on the lawn at 6 p.m.! $8. Ages 5-10. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave. N.E., Seattle. Tuesday, July 21, performance at 7 p.m.

Hound me!
They're natural enemies, but friendship prevails between The Fox and the Hound, the animated movie that wins my award for The Most Bizarre Blend o'Voice Talent (Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, Pearl Bailey and ... Corey Feldman). KidsQuest will be open for play and there will be special kid activities at this special "movies and the museum" event. Pre-registration is required. $5, members $4, $3 for pizza and lemonade. Ages 8 and under. KidsQuest Children's Museum, inside Factoria Mall, Bellevue. Wednesday, July 22, 6-9 p.m.

 Coraline

Creepy-cool

There's no doubt Coraline is a masterpiece - and there's no doubt it's too macabre for some kids. For kids (and adults!) about ages 11 and older, this is a captivating - and very dark - story about a little girl and an alternate reality.

We have copies of the DVD to give away! Just email us and put "Coraline" in the subject line.

Wiggles Go Bananas live show! You can win free tickets to the Friday, July 17th show at 7 p.m. To enter, email us your name; be sure to put "wiggles" in the subject line.
