It's a first
A First Night, that is; Tacoma's New Year's Eve bash is a family friendly, non-alcoholic event that features dozens of performances at venues (and on the street) around town. Hang out at the kids' stage (School of the Arts, 1118 Commerce) from 7-10:30 p.m. to see a play by SPARX, a dance "Cinderella" and mini ballet class for ages 3-6, Irish step dancing, belly dancing and more. $5-$10 per person, family (up to 8) $30. All ages. Thursday, Dec. 31, 6 p.m.-midnight.
Pyro-jamas!
Crazy science experiments and a cool race through hidden passages? A sleepover at the science center? A front-row view of the Space Needle fireworks? Sign me up! Nippy New Year!
Call it crazy, call it "refreshing," or even call it "fun" - it takes a certain kind of person to take part in the New Year's Day Polar Plunge. Lake Washington's water is about 50 degrees F at this time of year - and you're invited to immerse yourself neck-deep. Those who do will receive warm drinks, high praise and a Badge of Courage. You birder watch out
I'm telling you why! "Birds in Winter Super Saturday" is coming to town. Learn about some of the 100 species of birds that over-winter in Seward Park with games, arts and crafts, puzzles, and lots of fun interactive opportunities. From winter bird-friendly yards and information on bird feeders and seed choices, to fun bird games and activities, they'll have something for the birder in everyone. Free. All ages.
