Excursions + diversions

So worldly
Expose your wild things to world culture at the Discovery Museum! The week-long spring break program wraps up with a traditional Irish dancing lesson and Maypole dance on Thursday and a display of Central and South American reptiles on Friday. (Crafts and stories, too.) Free with admission. All ages. World Forestry Center, 4033 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. Through Friday, March 27: Daily, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Zoo's gone wild!
Crazy spring break action that's not available on video! The zoo throws a tropical party to celebrate spring break, with daily animal enrichment activities and keeper talks. Bears will get papier-mâché fish to tear into, and lorikeets (thanks, Google!) will get to pick at fruit leis. On Sunday, there's a science show with Flumpa the tree frog and Wendy the scientist at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Free with admission. All ages. Oregon Zoo, 4001 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. Through Saturday, April 4: Daily, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Well trained
Ride the rockin' rails with the Toy Trains - a fun kindie band that covers Dan Zanes tunes and plays fun original music for all ages. Order tickets online or try your luck at the door. $5, family $10. All ages. Airplay Cafe, 701 E Burnside, Portland. Saturday, March 28, 5 p.m.

Caped capers
Shake your booty at the superhero disco dance party, play galaxy games, and meet the Star Wars Storm Troopers from noon-2 p.m. Free with admission. All ages. Portland Children's Museum, 4015 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Oh, sure, that.
Nanotechnology, natch. I was either going to watch a little SpongeBob or head down to the opening of OMSI's newest exhibit, Intro to Nano. Hmmm....semiconductors...or Squidward? Actually, wouldn't miss the chance to see what one billion (and one billionth) of something looks like, explore the properties of a quantum dot, and watch floating "molecules" behave in an orderly fashion on an air hockey table. (And psst...the museum is open daily through April 5 for you spring-breakers!) Free with admission. All ages. OMSI, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland. Sunday, March 29, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
