Fear factor
No, you won't have to eat worms, but this cool new exhibit is all about fear, phobias and more. Scream! Featuring Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear is heavy on the punctuation, and on the neurobiology, psychology and physiology behind the things that creep us out. Hands-on activities include the Fear Lab and the Fear Challenge Course, where you can face up to common fears, like loud noises, electric shock, animals, and falling (sadly, fear of Teletubbies is not addressed). I'd tell you more but I'm scared. Free with admission. Ages 5 and up. OMSI, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland. Through Jan. 3: Tuesdays-Sundays 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Also open Mondays on Portland School holidays.

Culture club
It's Oregon's official Day of Culture, a day to celebrate all things cultured (except yogurt). Enjoy free admission today at the Oregon Historical Society, and check out the newly renovated Miller Pavilion. All ages. Oregon Historical Society, 1200 S.W. Park Ave, Portland. Friday, Oct. 9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Core values
Love apples, but can't tell 'em apart? Get beneath the skins of more than 60 varieties of apples and pears at the big Apple Tasting at Portland Nursery. Worm your way to the kids' area for storytelling, face-painting, toys and clowns -- plus music and cooking demos. Free. All ages. 5050 S.E. Stark, Portland. Oct. 9-18: Fridays-Sundays 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fired up
Kids + firehouses = fun! Take the little ones for a day of fire-safe play at Safety Saturday. It's a chance to learn about fire safety while exploring the historic Belmont Firehouse and its exhibits. Kids even get the chance to slide down the pole! Free. All ages. 900 S.E. 35th Ave., Portland. Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Clown around
Don't miss Angel Ocasio's bilingual variety show -- he'll show off his juggling, physical comedy and magic skills in an interactive performance that'll thrill the kiddos. Free. Ages 2 and up. North Portland Library, 512 N. Killingsworth St., Portland. Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m.
