Hoppy New Year!
It's not a typo, it's a sock hop! Put on your party clothes and head to the Fairview-Columbia library for a rockin' dance party, featuring games, music, refreshments, dancing and a countdown to the New Year at noon. Free. Ages 6 and under. 1520 N.E. Village St., Fairview. Thursday, Dec. 31, 11:30-12:30 a.m.


Happy Noon Year!
Here's another chance to celebrate dayside: At 10 a.m., make noisemakers, followed by a DJ dance party at 11 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., noon and 12:30 p.m., count down to the new year. At 1 p.m., do a tie-dye craft, and stick around for story time at 2 p.m. Free with admission. All ages. Portland Children's Museum, 4015 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. Night moves
Kids old enough to stay up late? Kids need to move their bodies? Get a two-fer at this cool midnight run! Head to the World Trade Center for food, dancing, music -- but no alcohol -- and a non-competitive 1.5- or 3-mile run. The party starts at 10 p.m.; running starts at midnight. $30-$35. All ages. Southwest Naito Parkway and Southwest Salmon Street, Portland. Thursday, Dec. 31, 10 a.m.


Bloomin' birthday
A beautiful friend is turning 10 - and we get the present! The Portland Classical Chinese Garden celebrates its 10th anniversary with 10 days of free admission. Head over to explore a city block's worth of paths, ponds and landscaping, and look for a new activity every day, from planting narcissus bulbs to music in the Teahouse. Free. All ages. 239 N.W. Everett St, Portland. Jan. 2-11: daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m.


You and Tree
Take in the fresh air - and learn a lot about trees - at a cool free tree farm hike! Join World Forestry Center staff at the Magness Property in Sherwood. You'll learn how to identify trees on a half-mile, easy hike that's perfect for families (stroller-friendly), and includes interpretive signs that will help you identify how the forest grows. Wear comfy shoes and drop by -- no reservations necessary. Rain or shine. Free. All ages. 31195 S.W. Ladd Hill Road, Sherwood. Ongoing, Sundays 2 p.m.


You and Wii
No Wii under the tree? No worries! The library has a new one, and you can play with it for free! All ages. Sellwood-Moreland Library, 7860 S.E 13th Ave., Portland. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1-3 p.m.
