It's a first
A First Night, that is; Tacoma's New Year's Eve bash is a family friendly, non-alcoholic event that features dozens of performances at venues (and on the street) around town. Hang out at the kids' stage (School of the Arts, 1118 Commerce) from 7-10:30 p.m. to see a play by SPARX, a dance "Cinderella" and mini ballet class for ages 3-6, Irish step dancing, belly dancing and more. Click on the link for the lineup. $5-$10 per person, family (up to 8) $30. All ages. Thursday, Dec. 31, 6 p.m.-midnight.
Right behind ya
Oh, sure, I'll be jumping into Long Lake just as soon as I finish this here latte. Really! The Polar Bear Plunge is entertaining, invigorating, and, may I say, somewhat mystifying. But if you're game, take the plunge - or not! - and enjoy campfires and cocoa. Plunge at 1 p.m. Free. All ages. Long Lake Park, 2790 Carpenter Road S.E., Lacey. Friday, Jan. 1, noon.
Very Flakey
Create cool snowflakes, 3-D stars and more at the museum's special Winter Wonderland. It's fun and free with admission. All ages. Hands On Children's Museum, 106 11th Ave. S.W., Olympia. Jan. 1-3: Friday, Sunday 12:30-3:30 p.m.; Saturday 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Day at the museum
History comes alive - really! Show your kids how easy they have it with a visit to the Fort. History re-enactor John Sallico portrays Jacques Portier, an “old Nor’Wester,” who celebrates the New Year with songs, stories and the poetry of William Henry Drummond. $3-$6. Ages 5 and up. Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, 5400 N. Pearl St. #11, Tacoma. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2 p.m.
Book shake
Shhhh! Be quiet in the library! Or not. Here's a high-energy story time that includes wacky stories and mucho dancing! Free. Ages 3-5. Tacoma Main Library, 1102 Tacoma Ave. S., Tacoma. Monday, Jan. 4, 10:30 a.m.
