Excursions + diversions

Some enchanted evening
Rodgers and Hammerstein's romantic musical South Pacific gets a big-time makeover-- this show was originally produced at the Lincoln Center Theater and won a raft of Tony Awards (including Best Director award for the Intiman's Bartlett Scher). It's rated PG -- check here for the why. $25.50-$103.50. The 5th Avenue Theatre, 1308 Fifth Ave., Seattle. Jan. 29-Feb. 21: Shows run Tuesdays-Sundays; check Web site for times.

Drums, major
That blonde woman you'll see down front doing her best interpretive high-step is our own Kristen, who lurves the heart-pounding percussion and athletic choreography of Japanese Taiko drumming -- check it out for yourself at TAO: The Martial Art of Drumming. All ages. $30-$58. The Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave., Seattle. Friday, Jan. 29, 8 p.m.

Pet cause
Is herding cats really all that hard? What about ferrets? Find out at Popovich's Comedy Pet Theater, where you'll see geese, doves, mice, dogs, cats and (yes) ferrets ride scooters, do acrobatic stunts and engage in other amazing hijinks. $15-$25. All ages. Kirkland Performance Center, 350 Kirkland Ave., Kirkland. Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30, 7 p.m.

Classical kidz
Kids learn about Antonin Dvorak's work the easy way at the Seattle Chamber Society's annual family concert, with music by Seattle's Klassikon String Quartet and illustrations from Carole Lexa Schaefer's picture book Two Scarlet Songbirds. The author herself -- along with KUOW's Dave Beck -- host. Arrive before the concert to explore a musical instrument petting zoo, courtesy of Music Center of the Northwest. Ages 5-10. $10. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle. Saturday, Jan. 30, 3 p.m.

Yellow fever
Experience the phenomenon that is a Gustafer Yellowgold show -- trippy animated images of Gustafer, a pointy-headed droplet of sun, are projected onto a large screen to mellow live music by creator Morgan Taylor. It's part of the Northwest Film Forum's Children's Film Festival -- buy tickets in advance. $12, members $10. Ages 5 and under. Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave., Seattle. Saturday, Jan. 30, 11 a.m.

Seeing red
PacSci's newest exhibit Facing Mars makes you wonder: Would you leave Earth behind for a risky, three-year trip to the Red Planet? Wouldja? Wouldja? Explore 28 exhibits that'll get you thinking about your initial answer to the question -- and some ethical questions related to the human exploration of Mars. Free with admission. All ages. Pacific Science Center, 200 Second Ave. N. , Seattle. Jan. 30-May 9: Mondays, Wednesdays-Fridays 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (winter hours)

  The Jimmies

Funny business
This collection of five music videos (plus a bonus CD and other cool features) by up-and-coming kindie rockers The Jimmies is infectious, inventive and oddly addictive. There’s never one dull moment in this funky visual feast that features band members running through comic strips, floating on clouds and comparing increasingly crazy “bad hair” days.

We have copies of Trying Funny Stuff to give away! Enter here.
