Choc- it up
You know you want to. Dive into three days (well, one evening and two days) of chocolate heaven at ChocolateFest -- taste samples from around the world, watch demos, and preview the new exhibit "The Chocolate Story," which explores the long history of the magical bean. $5-$8, under 3 free. All ages. World Forestry Center, 4033 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. Friday, Jan. 29, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 30 and Sunday, Jan. 31, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

No one nose
Northwest Children’s Theater & School presents a world-premiere adaptation of Pinocchio, an "industrial musical" in which our hero is a mechanical boy, not a wooden puppet. (The show runs through February, but this weekend it's presented as part of Portland-wide arts festival Fertile Ground 2010 -- festival performance dates are Jan 29 at 7 p.m., Jan 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. Buy a festival GrOw button for $5 and shave two bucks off the ticket price). $18-$22. Ages 6 and up. Northwest Neighborhood Cultural Center, 1819 N.W. Everett, Portland. Jan. 29-Feb. 21: Fridays 7 p.m.; Saturdays 2 p.m., 7 p.m.; Sundays 2 p.m.

Chili out
Raise money for a great cause at the annual Tryon Creek Chili Cook-off! You and yours can enjoy live music and a bowl o' beans (and vote for your fave); your admission will support the park's education and restoration programs. $15, members $12, ages 8 and under $8. All ages. Preregistration required. Tryon Creek State Park, 11321 S.W. Terwilliger Blvd., Portland. Saturday, Jan. 30, 5-7 p.m.

Yellow fever
Experience the phenomenon that is a Gustafer Yellowgold show -- trippy animated images of Gustafer, a pointy-headed droplet of sun, are projected onto a large screen to mellow live music by creator Morgan Taylor. $8-$10. Ages 5 and under. Curious Comedy, 5225 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland. Sunday, Jan. 31, 11 a.m.

You  know
The monthly kids' variety rock show You Who is a happenin' party for kids and their grownups -- come at noon for a bhangra dance party with DJ Anjali, and stick around for music by Explode into Colors, animation by Cartoon Exprez, crafts, treats and a few surprises. $5-$10, non-walkers free. All ages. McMenamin's Kennedy School, 5736 N.E 33rd Ave, Portland. Sunday, Jan. 31, doors at noon, show at 1 p.m.

Ball for a ballroom
Celebrate the historic Crystal Ballroom's near-centennial at the 10th annual Birthday Free-for-All! The grand old music venue turns 96th with tours of the Crystal Ballroom and Crystal Hotel (1 p.m., 3 p.m.); fun for the kiddos includes local kids' bands Eli Hirsch and Julian Andrews; Meet Your Monster; and Still Pending. Other all-ages acts include marimba and bluegrass, and country-rock with The Maldives. Free. All ages. 1332 W. Burnside, Portland. Sunday, Jan. 31, music at 1 p.m.

  The Jimmies

Funny business
This collection of five music videos (plus a bonus CD and other cool features) by up-and-coming kindie rockers The Jimmies is infectious, inventive and oddly addictive. There’s never one dull moment in this funky visual feast that features band members running through comic strips, floating on clouds and comparing increasingly crazy “bad hair” days.

We have copies of Trying Funny Stuff to give away! Enter here.
