Amuseum
If it's the first Friday of the month, it must be free fun time at the HOCM! This week, the Thurston County Sheriff will be on hand to do ID cards and eye scans, and PlayWise early learning activities will be available from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for ages 2-5. Free. All ages. Hands On Children's Museum, 106 11th Ave. S.W., Olympia. Friday, Jan. 8, 5-9 p.m.

Hobbit forming
Théâtre Sans Fil performs the beloved Tolkien story using nearly 50 life-sized puppets, including a 25-foot-long dragon! $9-$29. All ages. Pantages Theater, 901 Broadway, Tacoma. Friday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m.

Craft catchers
Create winter-themed ornaments and sun catchers under the guidance of a local artist at the museum's Family Day. Free with admission. All ages. Museum of Glass, 1801 E. Dock St., Tacoma. Saturday, Jan. 9, 1-4 p.m.

Parents' night out
Drop the kids off at the museum for a night of pizza and creative play (kids will make shadow puppets and mess around with light and shadow) – then make tracks for the nearest restaurant or movie theater for a little grownup time. Register in advance: 360-956-0818. Non-members $30, sibling $25; members $25/$20. Ages 4-10. Hands On Children's Museum, 106 11th Ave. S.W., Olympia. Saturday, Jan. 9, 6-9:30 p.m.

Noodles-n-eagles
No, it's not a casino concert! It's a chance to join a float on the Skagit River (led by Wildwater River Tours) to view hundreds of wintering bald eagles. The trip includes a spaghetti lunch. Call to register: 253-841-5457. $85, ages 6-12 $75. All ages. Sunday, Jan. 10 or Saturday, Jan. 16, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
