SUMMARY:Salmon SEEson at Cedar River Park
DESCRIPTION:A threatened run of Chinook\, as well as sockeye and coho\, return to the Cedar River each fall. Sockeye are the easiest to spot since they spawn together in groups and are brightly colored with red bodies and green heads. Look for larger Chinook in deeper pools\, and watch for coho migrating back to the upper reaches of the watershed. \nAt Cedar River Park\, you can watch how some salmon are removed for the sockeye hatchery. You may also spot a migrating Chinook or coho here. Learn about what salmon need to thrive and why clean and cold water is so important to their survival. Discover how you can help keep these special creatures coming back to our watersheds. Free and family-friendly! \nYou can also walk or bike along the Cedar River Trail between Cedar River sites and look for fish at the many bridges that cross the river. \nTo download a flyer to learn about all the Cedar River Salmon journey or for more info visit SeattleAquarium.org/salmon-journey.

SUMMARY:Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads
DESCRIPTION:Get up close with Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (2010) at the Olympic Sculpture Park\, where you can walk among these monumental sculptures. Consisting of 12 zodiac head sculptures arranged in an arcing semicircle\, each animal in Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads stands over ten feet tall and weighs over 1500 pounds. The sculptures are installed in order of the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Rabbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Ram\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Boar. \nThe works reconceive 12 zodiac heads that once decorated an 18th-century Qing imperial fountain before they were looted during the Second Opium War (1856–1860). Seven are based on the original heads that have survived\, and Ai researched and reimagined the five animals still missing to complete the zodiac. This work embodies Ai’s long engagement with questioning the tendency to value the real over the fake and the original over the copy. \nCircle of Animals/Zodiac Heads joins over twenty monumental sculptures in the park\, including The Eagle (1971) by Alexander Calder\, Wake (2002–3) by Richard Serra\, and Seattle Cloud Cover (2006) by Teresita Fernández. See this temporary installation situated in the Ackerly Meadow\, just outside of the PACCAR Pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle’s largest green space\, the nine-acre sculpture park\, is free and open daily from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset. \nOn display Mar 30\, 2026–Oct 24\, 2027. \nImage sourced from event website. SUMMARY:Storywalk at Alderwood Park: César's Cerulean Surprise
DESCRIPTION:Walk along and read the Storywalk at Alderwood Park during the park’s open hours. The September/October title is César’s Cerulean Surprise by Jenny Lacika. \nCésar asks to borrow his sister Gabi’s cerulean crayon\, but Gabi does not know what cerulean is and decides to identify the color by asking yes-no questions. It’s a window into an all-too-familiar sibling dynamic\, a slice of life many readers can identify with. Along with the subtle math hints\, both Gabi and César sprinkle in Spanish words. Further explanation can be found in an author’s note\, along with interactive tips for adults\, showing how to encourage the math connections during reading.

SUMMARY:StoryWalk at Lake Wilderness Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wilderness Arboretum and Maple Valley Library have partnered together to bring a StoryWalk to Maple Valley. StoryWalk is an innovative approach to encouraging people of all ages to get out and walk while enjoying wonderful children’s books. With her wealth of experience\, Sharon Chastain\, the children’s librarian at the Maple Valley Library\, selects the best children’s books for this story walk project. Then the pages are installed in frames along the Arboretum’s Main Looping Trail so as you walk\, you can read the book one page at a time\, all while enjoying being outside. Our hope is that this feature will provide children a new way to see\, learn and experience the amazing world that we live in. \nOctober StoryWalk:  \nThis month’s StoryWalk selection\, A Very Big Fall written by Emmy Kastner\, is a charming picture book about finding joy in change. As summer comes to an end and the air begins to chill and breezes begin to blow\, three leaf friends each have their own way of facing this change. New situations can be scary but these leaf friends learn that it can also be thrilling. Perhaps something we all need to remind ourselves about. \nSo get outside\, go for a walk\, and read a book.
