Denny International Middle School & Concord International School to celebrate their new international school designations

Ceremonies take place on Monday, Sept. 14 for Denny
and Tuesday, Sept. 15 for Concord

Seattle –
Denny International Middle School and Concord International School are hosting ceremonies to celebrate their start of the 2009-2010 school year as international schools. The Denny International Middle School ceremony will be on Monday, September 14 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. and feature steel drums, Mariachi, cultural dancing and Denny’s Dolphin Marching Band. Concord International School’s celebration takes place on Tuesday, September 15 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. and includes an all school assembly as well as students performing cultural dances and songs. Superintendent Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson, Ph.D., will speak at both events.

The expansion of our international school program is one of the strategies that Seattle Public Schools is utilizing to ensure excellence for all students. The mission of the international education program is to educate and prepare all students with the cultural competence and skills necessary to thrive in a global community and economy. Concord International School, led by Principal Norma Zavala, and Denny International Middle School, led by Principal Jeff Clark, are the third international elementary school and second international middle school, respectively, within Seattle Public Schools.

The international education program integrates global perspectives into daily learning, with an emphasis on multicultural literature, world economics, global health and arts, music, dance and drama from around the world. Students will also learn about a variety of cultures and countries using an international social studies curriculum that explores current challenges and issues facing the world community.
