Blacks Making History

Calendar/Event Details

Tired of Black History Month centering around a receding past, Michael Maine wanted to do something to emphasize the Black excellence present in the King County area on daily basis. His idea soon germinated into Blacks Making History. A portrait and mini-bio series that honored the past, celebrated the present and looked forward to the future. It recognized that as much as Black history is every American's history, our futures are just as much intertwined.

Joined by the South Seattle Emerald, Maine will host a weekly moderated talk/discussion by one of the subjects featured in the photo series.

Michael Maine is a King County based visual artist who uses photography, video, and audio to find, develop and share authentic stories of the areas unsung, and underappreciated. He's served as board President to Reel Grrls, a youth media program that teaches young people how to express themselves through film, and BEST (Business Ending Slavery and Trafficking), a collaborative nonprofit working to reduce sex trafficking.
