SUMMARY:Filipino American History Month Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Filipinos and Filipino Americans have long played a role in the transformation of the nation’s 250-year history\, from the islands of the Philippines to the farmlands of Wapato and the Yakima Valley. \nThis year\, The Filipino American National Historical Society – Greater Puget Sound Chapter (FANHS-GPS) is honored to host the Filipino American Community of the Yakima Valley\, whose members’ hard work in the Valley and dedication to community and Filipino history and culture are now forever memorialized with the addition of the Wapato Filipino Community Hall\, the first-ever Filipino community hall built from the ground up\, to the National Register of Historic Places. \nFANHS-GPS is also honored to host a panel shedding the light on the role of Filipino American labor activists in our nation’s history. The panel will consist of Rey Pascua\, noted Filipino American historian and activist\, and Sandra Bowman and Ileene Davis\, family members of Filipino American leader\, labor organizer and civil rights activist Larry Itliong. \nFinally\, with support from the Washington State History Museum\, FANHS-GPS is also proud to unveil several items from the museum’s archive that shed light on Filipino American history\, including a canon from the Philippines and a hand-sewn Philippine flag from the 1800s. \nJoin us as we celebrate the ani of our community by remembering the seeds of Filipino American history in Washington State and the hands that continue to steward the land that we call home. \nThe free community program will feature Filipino American community organizations and vendors\, along with performances\, demonstrations\, and opportunities to connect through shared history\, culture\, and traditions. \nImage sourced from event website.
