Opera, classical music, theater, and dance reflect industry cultures long permeated by racism and deep-seated inequities for Black people and other People of Color. The recent murders of George Floyd and others have laid bare the urgent need for systemic change in all aspects of our society, with the arts being no exception. This overdue reckoning comes at a time when opera houses are shuttered across the country, presenting us with an opportunity to pause, reflect on our industry, and lay the groundwork for a new future for opera once we are able to reopen and rebuild. Join Black and PoC opera professionals for our latest Community Conversation, in which we reflect on this pivotal moment in history and how opera can reemerge as a space of belonging, healing, and liberation for communities of color.
