SUMMARY:Storywalk at Alderwood Park: César's Cerulean Surprise
DESCRIPTION:Walk along and read the Storywalk at Alderwood Park during the park’s open hours. The September/October title is César’s Cerulean Surprise by Jenny Lacika. \nCésar asks to borrow his sister Gabi’s cerulean crayon\, but Gabi does not know what cerulean is and decides to identify the color by asking yes-no questions. It’s a window into an all-too-familiar sibling dynamic\, a slice of life many readers can identify with. Along with the subtle math hints\, both Gabi and César sprinkle in Spanish words. Further explanation can be found in an author’s note\, along with interactive tips for adults\, showing how to encourage the math connections during reading.

SUMMARY:Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads
DESCRIPTION:Get up close with Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (2010) at the Olympic Sculpture Park\, where you can walk among these monumental sculptures. Consisting of 12 zodiac head sculptures arranged in an arcing semicircle\, each animal in Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads stands over ten feet tall and weighs over 1500 pounds. The sculptures are installed in order of the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Rabbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Ram\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Boar. \nThe works reconceive 12 zodiac heads that once decorated an 18th-century Qing imperial fountain before they were looted during the Second Opium War (1856–1860). Seven are based on the original heads that have survived\, and Ai researched and reimagined the five animals still missing to complete the zodiac. This work embodies Ai’s long engagement with questioning the tendency to value the real over the fake and the original over the copy. \nCircle of Animals/Zodiac Heads joins over twenty monumental sculptures in the park\, including The Eagle (1971) by Alexander Calder\, Wake (2002–3) by Richard Serra\, and Seattle Cloud Cover (2006) by Teresita Fernández. See this temporary installation situated in the Ackerly Meadow\, just outside of the PACCAR Pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle’s largest green space\, the nine-acre sculpture park\, is free and open daily from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset. \nOn display Mar 30\, 2026–Oct 24\, 2027. \nImage sourced from event website. SUMMARY:For Which it Stands: The Many Threads of the American Flag
DESCRIPTION:The American flag is a dynamic and evolving symbol inviting belonging\, inspiring sacrifice\, and projecting power. Across generations\, people used it to celebrate the nation’s founding ideals\, while others used it to challenge the country to live up to those same promises. \nFor Which It Stands invites visitors to explore the many meanings and contradictions embodied in the flag. Through historical flags and imagery from MOHAI Collections\, alongside contributions from community partners\, this exhibit traces how the flag appears in moments of unity\, protest\, conflict\, and change. \nVisitors encounter stories reflecting a wide range of perspectives\, highlighting how different communities embrace\, question\, and redefine the flag’s symbolism over time. These layered histories reveal the flag not as a fixed icon\, but as a living symbol shaped by the people who carry it forward. \nA collective\, interactive artwork invites guests to consider what this symbol represents for them personally\, culturally\, and nationally\, and to weave themselves into the story of the flag. \nBy examining both the ideals the flag represents and the realities of American history\, the exhibit encourages visitors to think critically about how national symbols shape identity and how they might be used to imagine a more inclusive future.

SUMMARY:Comet Lodge Haunted Trail
DESCRIPTION:FREE Comet Lodge Haunted Trail is back for our fourth year. \nWe invite all of you to our 100% FREE\, children friendly\, Haunted Trail. \nThis is our biggest and most ambitious offering yet \nThe main theme will be a tribute to Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. \nIt will have a marquee façade of the Palace theatre\, zombies\, a grave yard\, a werewolf\, a full moon\, and appearances by the Seattle Thrillers flash mob group performing the famous Thriller zombie dance. \nOnce you make it through the graveyard must tiptoe your way through the witches lair. Navigate a corn maze while dodging man eating plants and animated scarecrows. From there you will have to choose whether to go through the haunted pumpkin patch or brave the spooky swamp. I don’t want to ruin the whole surprise so you will have to come see for yourself. \nWe are planning for October 16 & 17 (fri & sat)\, the 23th & 24th (fri & sat)\, the 30th (fri) and of course Halloween on Saturday\, October 31st. \nWe are doing a lot of extra work to be open for the October 16 & 17th dates so please come. I would hate to see the work be in vain. Everyone is of course welcome to come as many times as they want. \nWe will be open from 6 to 9 PM. With extended hours on Halloween 5:30 to 9:30 on Halloween.\nIf you have sensitive children please come around 5:30 before the sun goes down on the second and third weekends. You can also contact us to make an appointment to come during the week. \nWe are located on South Beacon Hill near the Comet Lodge Cemetery. We will post our address closer to the event date.\nWe will have big orange signs pointing the way at Beacon Ave & Orcus and also at Graham & 23rd Ave. \nWe of course will have candy. \nWe may adjust the schedule due to rain by subtracting a particularly rainy day and adding Sunday of that weekend\, so please follow our facebook page to keep updated. You can also see video clips from last year there too. Though I think it is even better this year. \nImage sourced from event website.
