In response to the recent unprecedented events following the death of George Floyd, children are asking questions regarding racial injustice. Explaining such complex topics to children requires a sensitive developmental approach that acknowledges their legitimate questions and their worries. In this two-part free live session series, INSIGHTS Intervention responds to the tough questions that children are asking regarding racial injustice.
Part 1, July 8- For Parents: Dr. Sandee McClowry, an expert in helping children and their parents deal with life’s dilemmas, provides parents with guidelines for discussing racial injustice and other complex issues with children. Using a developmental approach, she offers advice on how the same questions need to be addressed differently depending on a child’s age and cognitive abilities.
Part 2, July 9- For Kids: Dr. Sandee discusses racial injustice with the assistance of the INSIGHTS puppets. Fredrico the Friendly begins by directly asking what happened to Mr. Floyd? Hilary the Hard Worker questions why some people are treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. She also wonders about the safety of her big brother who is marching in the protests. Coretta the Cautious asks whether she can trust the police in her community. And Gregory the Grumpy discusses how members of his family have very different opinions about racial injustice. The session ends with all the puppets discussing what they and the children who are watching the webinar can do to support racial justice for all people.
Parents of young children might want to attend the 2nd class with their child in case of questions.
