SUMMARY:Salmon Viewing at the Ballard Locks
DESCRIPTION:Salmon have always been vital to the Pacific Northwest’s ecosystem. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, Seattle District Engineer Maj. Hiram M. Chittenden\, for whom the locks are now named\, understood this and planned on incorporating a fish ladder in the designs when he proposed building them in the early 1900s. \nThe best times for viewing salmon migrating upstream in the ladder are: \n\nChinook\, or King Salmon\, July through November (best viewing last two weeks of August)\nCoho\, or Silver Salmon\, August through November (best viewing last two weeks of September)\nSockeye\, or Red Salmon\, June through October (best viewing July)\n\nPlan a whole day at the Locks with our handy guide.

SUMMARY:Art in Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Art is blooming once again along the Snoqualmie Valley Trail! \nAfter a successful inaugural year in Carnation\, the Art in Nature Walk has expanded to Fall City and North Bend\, inviting visitors to explore outdoor art installations across all three Snoqualmie Valley communities. Over 167 local artists have transformed familiar trails into an open-air gallery inspired by the beauty of the valley. \nThe season began with joyful opening celebrations on July 1\, including a gathering of more than 165 community members in Carnation to celebrate local artists\, creativity\, and community. \nStroll the trails throughout July and August to discover unique works of art nestled in nature\, each offering a fresh perspective on the places we know and love. Many of the featured pieces are also available through an online auction through August 31\, with proceeds supporting the participating artists. \nCome wander\, discover\, and experience the magic that happens when art and nature meet in the Snoqualmie Valley. \n“This collaboration allows us to create something larger than any one organization could do alone — a summer-long celebration of art that directly supports the artists who make it\,” said Simone Oliver\, President of Lee Arts Foundation. \nWalking Information:\n• Carnation: ~0.25-mile walk to the art + ~0.25 miles of artwork\n• Fall City: ~0.7-mile walk to the art + ~0.25 miles of artwork *Parking is very limited\n• North Bend: ~0.3-mile walk to the art + ~0.25 miles of artwork \nImage sourced from event website.

SUMMARY:StoryWalk at Lake Wilderness Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The Lake Wilderness Arboretum and Maple Valley Library have partnered together to bring a StoryWalk to Maple Valley. StoryWalk is an innovative approach to encouraging people of all ages to get out and walk while enjoying wonderful children’s books. With her wealth of experience\, Sharon Chastain\, the children’s librarian at the Maple Valley Library\, selects the best children’s books for this story walk project. Then the pages are installed in frames along the Arboretum’s Main Looping Trail so as you walk\, you can read the book one page at a time\, all while enjoying being outside. Our hope is that this feature will provide children a new way to see\, learn and experience the amazing world that we live in. \nAugust StoryWalk:  \nThis month’s StoryWalk selection\, One-Dog Canoe written by Mary Casanova\, is an engaging story about a girl and her dog heading out for a canoe trip together. The canoe ride doesn’t go as planned but laughing aside any inconveniences leads to a fun and entertaining trip. Sometimes things don’t go the way we planned but that doesn’t mean they don’t end up exactly as they should. \nSo get outside\, go for a walk\, and read a book.

SUMMARY:Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads
DESCRIPTION:Get up close with Ai Weiwei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (2010) at the Olympic Sculpture Park\, where you can walk among these monumental sculptures. Consisting of 12 zodiac head sculptures arranged in an arcing semicircle\, each animal in Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads stands over ten feet tall and weighs over 1500 pounds. The sculptures are installed in order of the traditional Chinese zodiac cycle: Rat\, Ox\, Tiger\, Rabbit\, Dragon\, Snake\, Horse\, Ram\, Monkey\, Rooster\, Dog\, and Boar. \nThe works reconceive 12 zodiac heads that once decorated an 18th-century Qing imperial fountain before they were looted during the Second Opium War (1856–1860). Seven are based on the original heads that have survived\, and Ai researched and reimagined the five animals still missing to complete the zodiac. This work embodies Ai’s long engagement with questioning the tendency to value the real over the fake and the original over the copy. \nCircle of Animals/Zodiac Heads joins over twenty monumental sculptures in the park\, including The Eagle (1971) by Alexander Calder\, Wake (2002–3) by Richard Serra\, and Seattle Cloud Cover (2006) by Teresita Fernández. See this temporary installation situated in the Ackerly Meadow\, just outside of the PACCAR Pavilion at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Seattle’s largest green space\, the nine-acre sculpture park\, is free and open daily from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset. \nOn display Mar 30\, 2026–Oct 24\, 2027. \nImage sourced from event website. SUMMARY:For Which it Stands: The Many Threads of the American Flag
DESCRIPTION:The American flag is a dynamic and evolving symbol inviting belonging\, inspiring sacrifice\, and projecting power. Across generations\, people used it to celebrate the nation’s founding ideals\, while others used it to challenge the country to live up to those same promises. \nFor Which It Stands invites visitors to explore the many meanings and contradictions embodied in the flag. Through historical flags and imagery from MOHAI Collections\, alongside contributions from community partners\, this exhibit traces how the flag appears in moments of unity\, protest\, conflict\, and change. \nVisitors encounter stories reflecting a wide range of perspectives\, highlighting how different communities embrace\, question\, and redefine the flag’s symbolism over time. These layered histories reveal the flag not as a fixed icon\, but as a living symbol shaped by the people who carry it forward. \nA collective\, interactive artwork invites guests to consider what this symbol represents for them personally\, culturally\, and nationally\, and to weave themselves into the story of the flag. \nBy examining both the ideals the flag represents and the realities of American history\, the exhibit encourages visitors to think critically about how national symbols shape identity and how they might be used to imagine a more inclusive future.
