Weekend Community Celebration of MLK Day at BIMA

BIMA stands in solidarity with our community to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We welcome our diverse communities to the January 15 all-day Community Celebration, featuring a program of speakers, art, music, demonstrations, and activities put together by local organizers, educators, artists, activists, youth, elders, and social justice organizations. 

WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS

Friday, Jan. 13, 6-9pm:

Move & Be Moved Social Justice Social

Presented by ERACE, the Social Justice Social gathers community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Join us for a night of sharing resources, strategy, camaraderie, and joy, all in service of realizing Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community striving for justice. Find inspiration and connection though interactive elements, conversation spaces, music, dance, food, and more.

Admission is free, and drinks and cookies will be available at no cost. We are excited to announce that Aunt Dolly’s West African Marketplace will be on-site with delicious fare for purchase. Masks are strongly recommended in all indoor spaces of the museum to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other sickness, and free masks will be offered at the door to any attendees who need them.

Saturday, Jan. 14, 11am-4pm

Classroom Printing Session with Amos Kennedy

Join printmaker, book artist, and provocateur Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. in the BIMA classroom between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, January 14, 2023 for a special letterpress print-in. All are welcome to drop in and observe the transformative process of community members creating powerful posters out of words and images using wood type, linoleum blocks and ink. Press Kits assembled by Partners in Print, featuring Provisional Presses, will be featured during this event. This special event with Amos Kennedy and his evening talk at 6:30pm in the Auditorium coincides with BIMA’s exhibition of Kennedy’s Rosa Parks Series, on view in the Orientation Gallery from December 7, 2022 – February 28, 2023.

Letterpress Printing as Community Building with Amos Kennedy

Join printmaker, book artist, and provocateur Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. for special event with Amos Kennedy on using letterpress printing to build community. The talk coincides with BIMA’s exhibition of Kennedy’s Rosa Parks Series, on view in the Orientation Gallery from December 7, 2022 – February 28, 2023.

Sunday, Jan. 15, 2:30-5pm:

Intersection of Culture, Identity, & The Dream Community Celebration

Join ERACE at BIMA for a performance from the Awesome Praise choir from 2:30-3:00 PM on the BIMA main staircase. This youth led and youth developed celebration examines contemporary impacts of Dr. King’s legacy and its inspiration of a new generation of youth leaders, activists, and artists. Featuring poetry, dance, oratory presentations, music, singing, and community voices, this event captures the energy, excitement, and earnest exuberance of modern day dreams of social justice.
