Welcome to Hope Lutheran School, one of the largest private Lutheran schools in the Pacific Northwest. When it was established in 1959, Hope Lutheran School opened its doors to 88 students in grades kindergarten through grade 5. Today, Hope enrolls over 200 students, preparing them for lifelong learning from preschool through eighth grade.
At Hope Lutheran School, we believe that there are many different layers of educating a child. For students to engage fully in learning, they first need to feel safe, secure, and cared for. One of our core values is relationships, and we value building strong connections between teachers and students and students and their peers, to help them establish trust with staff and with each other. We believe that God created us in all different shapes, sizes, and colors, giving us unique talents, gifts, and abilities. We work hard to challenge each student wherever they currently are in their academic learning, with opportunities for advanced work or resource support if needed. We offer small guided reading groups during literacy to help students reach their highest potential. After lengthy research, in fall 2012 our school adopted “Math in Focus” curriculum, based on Singapore math, which challenges all students in their math abilities. In fall 2013, we updated our science curriculum to include more hands-on inquiry-based learning with the implementation of “Interactive Science” for K-5 students and Full Option Science System kits (FOSS) for middle school students. Core subjects at Hope Lutheran School include math, literacy, history, religion, and science, with specialists teaching technology, physical education, Spanish, and music to all grades. Our small class sizes (an average student to teacher ratio of 18:1) ensure each child’s unique needs are met in a caring yet rigorous environment.
As part of our commitment to staying current with technology, Hope Lutheran School offers Smart Boards in every classroom compatible with our curriculum and the web, and an extensive computer lab with over 20 terminals and 5 laptops in each middle school classroom. We have also instituted a 1:1 ipad program for our middle school students to assist them in their day-to-day learning. Hope strives to meet each child where they are at in their journey. We recognize that not all students learn at the same rate or levels as their peers which is why we are one of the only private schools in our area to provide the Discovery Program for those children that qualify for special learning needs and private tutoring. We also provide a Resource assistant who is able to give special one-on-one time several times a week that need a bit more assistance with math, reading or writing. We support our working parents by providing extended care for Preschool 3- 5th grade from 7a.m. - 6p.m. Our after school clubs include Math Club, Knowledge Bowl, Chess Club, Lego Club (k-3rd grade), Glee Club and study hall. Hope Lutheran offers an outdoor educational trip for 6th grade as well as a yearly trip to Washington D.C. for 7th/8th graders. Being physically active is very important to Hope school. We offer quality physical education (PE) to all students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Kindergarten through fourth grade has two 45-minute classes per week, while the fifth through eighth grade has three 45-minute classes. We also offer sports all year round including Cross Country, Flag Football, girls Volleyball, boys and girls Basketball and Track. The school has incorporated Lacrosse into the physical education program.
Hope Lutheran School’s music program brings the experience and excitement of music to our students from preschool through grade 8. Our program is designed to help children develop a lifelong love of music. Each child is encouraged and given numerous opportunities to sing and learn musical instruments in order to make music with others. Drama is an integral part of education; it aids children in language and communication, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Drama also enhances empathy and social awareness, as well as self-concept. At Hope Lutheran School, we offer a comprehensive after school drama program that fosters all these elements, and we have tremendous fun while doing so! Glee Club practices every Wednesday morning and performs for the school, church and at LEST (Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament). We are pleased to be able to offer our students and parents award winning drama programs, holiday concerts, handbell middle school elective, Chapel Band, yearbook, and advanced technology electives and after school art for elementary grades. We take joy in the many talents of our students which they display at our yearly talent show. Other yearly events include our academic fair which focuses on a particular subject in which each classroom creates an educational project; students participate in two musicals in the year to showcase our musical program; state spelling bee; and students in grades 5-8 participate in the Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament in Portland each year. Our students compete in Chess, the Knowledge Bowl, Basketball, Dance and Drill, Drama, Spelling, Science Exposition, Art, Mathematics and Music.
