Specializing in special needs children, Kerri Kirshner, owner of Acclaimed Photography in Bothell, Washington, has been involved in photography for over 20 years. She added special needs children to her traditional portraiture of children, families and students shortly after completing the unique training and accreditation through SKPA. Kirshner has been photographing children with special needs for over 5 years. She is currently the President of Special Kids Photography of America (SKPA), a non-profit organization that trains professional photographers how to capture beautiful images of children with disabilities and/or serious illness. Kirshner understands that there are number of reasons families find it difficult to take a special child to a professional studio. Before the photo session she begins with an in-depth conversation with the parents, asking what their child likes or if they have sensitivity to lighting or anything else that may occur during the session. This is followed by a photo session in the child’s home, at the studio, outdoors or wherever deemed best for that particular child. Kirshner’s approach to photographing special children is quite unique. If a child uses a wheelchair or feeding tube, she works with parents to provide a special setting that will produce the best outcome and show the beauty of each child. The Seattle Professional Photographers Association (SPPA) recently awarded Kerri Kirshner Photographer of the Year for 2011. Each year SPPA awards the Photographer of the Year, to the photographer who consistently outperforms the other contestants via their monthly competitions.
