Does your teen love environmental science? Help them prepare for their college studies and future careers in the field! This January, high school students are invited to join in Pacific Science Center’s Environmental Science and Technology Practicum at Mercer Slough Environmental Center in Bellevue. The practicum is for teens in grades 9-12 who are interested in careers in environmental science and clean technology, providing them with hands-on experience that will prepare them for futures in this promising and in-demand career field. In our eight-week Environmental Science and Technology Practicum, students gain experience in environmental science and clean technology while exploring career possibilities through professional networking. Each session focuses on in-depth aquatic and terrestrial investigations in the biologically diverse wetlands of Mercer Slough and includes valuable time in the field as well as in our state-of-the-art wet lab. High-level professionals specializing in this field share their cutting-edge work as well as mentor students and discuss next steps on specific career paths. Students receive a certificate of completion to include in their academic portfolios and to enhance college applications. In a typical session, students spend the first two hours in the field and laboratory and the last hour interacting with an environmental scientist or clean technology professional. Topics include chemical oceanography, natural resource assessment, ecological restoration, environmental and occupational health, water quality, low impact development, stormwater and sewage treatment, renewable energy, smart grid and energy efficiency, as well as engineering and innovations in the built environment. The practicum provides opportunities for high school students to: • Gain hands-on field and laboratory experience in our state-of-the-art wet lab • Explore careers in environmental science and clean technology • Learn about the newest cutting-edge research happening in this field • Engage with high-level professionals in this field who act as career mentors • Earn a certificate of completion to include in academic portfolios and college applications Program Details: • Grades: 9-12 • Eight-week spring session begins January 11, 2014. • Saturdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. • Fall session: $375 Space is limited.
