The sun is shining, temperatures are rising, and summer is in full swing. Which means, naturally, it’s our favorite time of year: sweet treat summer.
My kids and I traveled far and wide across Seattle and beyond in search of unique and noteworthy desserts, and we rounded up a list guaranteed to delight your sweet tooth. But there’s a catch.
Here’s the scoop: You won’t find traditional ice cream on this list — at least not without a twist. (If classic scoops are what you’re craving, you can find our favorite Seattle-area ice cream spots here.)
For this list, I wanted to think outside the cone and find Seattle desserts that are anything but ordinary. Think adorable animal-shaped ice cream, pastries that look exactly like real fruit, towering bowls of fluffy bingsu and even a cheesecake mousse shaped like a bulldog. I know, I couldn’t believe it either — but you just have to trust me.
These treats are just as fun to look at as they are to eat.
Besito Homemade Ice Cream
Located in First Hill, Besito offers some of the cutest ice cream creations I’ve ever seen — and eaten.
Honestly, the adorable animal faces were almost too cute to eat. Almost.
You start by picking your favorite animal — doggy, bear, koala or piggy — and then choose from an array of ice cream flavors. Horchata was my favorite, but you really can’t go wrong.
My kids and I each picked a different animal-shaped creation and then spent a few minutes appreciating their edible ears, button noses and sweet little faces before happily eating them.
The ice cream was delicious, but the café itself was almost as fun as the dessert. Everything about the space feels playful and eclectic, from pops of pink and neon signs to colorful murals covering the walls. And then there’s the umbrella-covered ceiling, which is something you really have to see in person.
It’s the kind of place where kids are entertained before the ice cream even arrives. We will definitely be back.

Ladun Treats
At first glance, the display case at Ladun Treats looks like it’s filled with brightly colored pieces of fruit. But look again. Those berries, peaches, coconuts and bananas are actually desserts.
Ladun has been gaining attention for its incredibly realistic shell desserts, and they look more like edible art than pastries.
We tried the mango, coconut, banana and pear. Each has a delicate outer shell that produces an audible and satisfying crunch when you bite into it, and in the center is a mousse-like mixture, often paired with fruit purée. The combination of textures is really unique, and we also appreciated that the desserts weren’t overwhelmingly sweet.
The small storefront also felt surprisingly family-friendly. The space is elegant and polished, but there’s a small play kitchen tucked into the corner for kids. It almost felt like we were attending a cute tea party.
And parents, take note: The café menu has a strawberry matcha latte. You know I love good matcha.

Many Bennies
We just talked about desserts that look like fruit. Now, hear me out: How about ice cream made with real fruit?
At Many Bennies, everything is made to order and tastes incredibly fresh. The process is easy. Start by choosing a cup or cone, then pick a base: sweet cream, vegan vanilla or vanilla lavender. Next, choose your fruit and finish with toppings.
It’s a fun twist on traditional ice cream, and the fresh fruit somehow makes the whole thing feel a little less indulgent. My kids loved finding real pieces of fruit mixed into the ice cream. There was actual squealing when chunks of mangos were discovered in their swirls.
Then, of course, there is the notable finishing touch: tiny candied eyes added to each cup or cone of delicious swirling ice cream. My kids promptly renamed it “monster ice cream,” and the name stuck. And really, what else would you expect from an ice cream shop located in Fremont, the self-proclaimed Center of the Universe?

Lumi Dessert Café
If you’re craving a sweet treat, our family highly recommends Lumi Dessert Café.
We love the Lynnwood location, tucked into an unassuming shopping center with convenient parking. It feels like a hidden dessert gem.
The bright, airy café is the perfect place to gather around a mound of fluffy bingsu, an icy Korean dessert sometimes called “milk snow.” If you’ve never tried bingsu before, imagine shaved ice — but much softer and fluffier because it’s made with milk. You’ll find a smorgasbord of toppings piled on top. Fruit, caramel sauce, boba, chocolate, cheesecake and more can all make an appearance depending on the flavor you choose.
Lumi’s handcrafted bingsu was a huge hit with my kids. We love Berrylicious and Choco Brownie, but there are plenty of options to work your way through, including Oreo Crunch, Mango Cheesecake and Banana Crumble, plus rotating seasonal choices.
The bingsu is served on a cute tray with condensed milk on the side for drizzling, which my kids considered an important responsibility.
It also comes in three sizes — mini, single and regular — so you can choose between individual servings or one big dessert to share.

Snowy Village
Snowy Village has locations in Seattle, Bellevue and Renton, so a bowl of fluffy, creamy shaved ice is never too far away, no matter which side of the lake you’re on.
Snowy Village specializes in traditional bingsoo — another common spelling of bingsu — as well as Japanese taiyaki, an adorable fish-shaped cake.
We recommend trying the Oreo, mango or strawberry bingsoo. For parents, the espresso bingsoo is a sweet, caffeinated treat.
And if your kids subscribe to the theory that food is automatically better when it’s shaped like an animal, add a taiyaki to your order.

Cold Plate
We’re on a roll — and so is Cold Plate. Have your kids ever watched rolled ice cream being made? An ice cream mixture is poured onto an extremely cold surface, spread thin and then scraped into individual rolls. The process is half the fun. It’s like dessert and a show. Watching a puddle of ice cream transform into perfect little spirals makes waiting for dessert surprisingly entertaining. Then the rolls are tucked into a cup and loaded with toppings and a big dollop of whipped cream.
We warned you there wouldn’t be any generic scoops on this list.

Marination ma kai
Aloha! I have a treat for you.
Marination ma kai, nestled along the waterfront in West Seattle, serves delicious Hawaiian shave ice. And yes, it’s “shave ice,” not “shaved ice.”
The location alone makes this one worth adding to your summer list. Marination ma kai sits right next to the water taxi dock, with sweeping views across Elliott Bay toward downtown Seattle.
The shave ice flavors are made in-house. Choose from options including strawberry, mango guava and others, then add vanilla or coconut ice cream.
Everything gets layered together into one colorful, refreshing treat.
Plan to stay a while when you visit. Lines can get long during the summer, but there’s plenty nearby to keep kids entertained. Watch the water taxi come and go, check out the people fishing from the pier or wander down toward the rocky shoreline.
Better yet, take the water taxi over and turn dessert into an entire Seattle summer adventure.

Timeless Tea
If I’m being completely honest, we originally went to Timeless Tea because we had heard great things about its snow ice.
Then we saw the rest of the dessert menu, and things escalated quickly.
We ended up trying nearly every dessert on the menu, including a cheesecake mousse shaped like a bulldog. It might be the cutest dessert in the world. It was genuinely difficult to eat something with a tiny puppy face staring back at us, but we managed.
In addition to snow ice, Timeless Tea serves an impressive assortment of beautifully presented desserts and drinks.
My advice: Don’t walk in assuming everyone will share one thing. When you go, be prepared to spend a little more than planned, because narrowing down the dessert order is harder than it sounds.
Timeless Tea has three locations around the area: Seattle, Bellevue and Issaquah.
Locations:
1000 N.E. 50th St., Seattle
14320 N.E. 20th St., Unit D, Bellevue
1580 N.W. Gilman Blvd., Suite D5, Issaquah
