Meteor Magic: A Perseid Star Party

Saturday, Aug. 8 @ 9 p.m.–11:30 p.m.

Each August, Earth passes through a stream of tiny bits of dust and rock left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As those particles streak into our atmosphere at incredible speeds, they burn up in brilliant flashes of light, creating one of the year’s most celebrated celestial events: the Perseid meteor shower.

Join IslandWood and the Battle Point Astronomical Association for an unforgettable evening exploring the science and beauty of the Perseids. Whether you’re an experienced stargazer or simply curious about the night sky, this special collaboration offers an engaging blend of astronomy, exploration, and discovery.

The evening begins with an interactive planetarium presentation exploring what meteors really are, why meteor showers occur at predictable times each year, and why the Perseids always appear to radiate from the same region of the sky. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the celestial mechanics behind this annual phenomenon before stepping outside to experience it for yourself.

As twilight gives way to darkness, Battle Point astronomers will guide you through the night sky, share the story of the Perseids, and demonstrate telescopes trained on some of the universe’s most remarkable sights. Depending on viewing conditions, guests may observe Saturn, the Great Hercules Cluster, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Whirlpool Galaxy, Bode’s Galaxy, the Cigar Galaxy, the Pinwheel Galaxy, and other deep-sky treasures.

While waiting for the next meteor to flash overhead, guests may also choose to join a guided walk along Battle Point’s scale-model Solar System Trail. Illuminated by red-light flashlights that preserve your night vision, this peaceful walk offers a remarkable perspective on the immense distances between the planets in our own solar system.

Whether you’re hoping to catch a dazzling meteor streaking across the sky, peer into galaxies millions of light-years away, or simply spend a memorable summer evening learning alongside passionate local astronomers, this is an experience that will leave you looking at the night sky with fresh eyes.
