Dia de Los Muertos Ofrenda for Animals at Farrel-McWhirter Park

(All Ages) Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a vibrant Mexican tradition that honors and celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away, and October 27 – November 2 are special days dedicated to remember the spirits of our animal companions. While our pets and animal friends may no longer walk beside us, their presence remains deeply felt, and this is a day to honor that connection. The tradition is rooted in pre-Hispanic Indigenous rituals and has evolved through the years.

An ofrenda, or “offering” is a beautifully decorated altar meant to welcome spirits home. We will be celebrating the lives of past farm animals, and if you would like to participate bring a picture of one of your favorite animals from the farm, draw a photo of them, or write a letter to them. You may also bring a photo of your deceased pet or animal to add to the altar. We will keep the ofrenda up overnight, and photos maybe be picked up by November 2.

If you would like to create an ofrenda at home here’s how:

Select a place for your alter that was meaningful to your pet, and where you can safely place items
Place a photo of your pet at the center of the alter, or draw a picture of their likeness, or write their name on a piece of paper surrounded by hearts
Include their favorite things, like a collar, a favorite toy, or a small treat
Candles help light their way home
Marigolds bright colour and scent are said to guide the spirits back
Water will refresh them after their long jouney
Include a note or letter to your animal companion, and share what they meaned to you
By keeping photos up of our deceased animal companions their memory will always be with us!
