Chicago has pizza. Maine has lobster rolls. And while some may say seafood is Seattle’s culinary claim to fame, I’m not one of them. Don’t get me wrong. Local restaurants do serve some of the best salmon, clams and crab around. But when it comes to food the city craves, I’m going out on a limb to say it’s burgers. Dick’s, Red Mill, Lil Woody’s, Next Level, Katsu — these local chains are just the start of a very long list.

For a city that seems to love its burgers, it’s only fitting that one local joint — Uneeda Burger — is giving away free burgers to celebrate National Hamburger Day this Thursday, May 28. Here’s what families need to know to get in on the deal.

The need-to-know details

The giveaway takes place at Uneeda Burger in Fremont (4302 Fremont Ave. N., in Seattle) on Thursday, May 28, from 11 a.m.–8 p.m., or while supplies last.

Each guest gets one free Classic Burger for dine-in or in-person takeout only. The deal doesn’t work for online or delivery orders, and everyone who wants a free burger needs to be there. So no sending one parent in to grab grub while the other tends to rowdy kids in the car.

Also worth noting: substitutions and add-ons are priced separately.

Tips for parents

This is a one-day deal with a limited supply, so going earlier in the day is recommended. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m., and last I checked burgers make a good brunch too.

Free food, especially something as tasty as a Uneeda burger, is pretty motivating for most folks, so plan on waiting in line. Have a family game plan to keep the kids occupied while you wait with the masses for your food.

Parking in Fremont is limited. Consider taking public transit or even biking over with the kids, if you’re able.

Is it a good deal?

Anyone who’s been to the grocery store or eaten out at a restaurant recently knows that food costs are way up and aren’t showing signs of dropping anytime soon.

So a free Classic Burger, especially one as good as Uneeda’s — it’s made with all-natural Northwest beef, fresh tomatoes, house pickles and signature sauce on a locally baked sesame bun — is reason enough for many families to visit the restaurant. And even if you end up ordering shakes and veggie tempura to go with your burger, it’s still a good deal.
