Spooky season is nearly upon us. I scare too easily for haunted houses, but there’s a brand-new experience at a beloved local chocolate factory that seems a little sweeter. Maeve (formerly Seattle Chocolate) has designed an out-of-this-world escape room where families can brave a haunted planet and work together to find magical chocolate. It replaces the Haunted Factory Tour of years past, and tickets are on sale now.

The Haunted Escape Room Experience

Much like the Haunted Factory Tour, the Haunted Escape Room Experience is story-driven. You’ll first step aboard a sparkling spaceship (belonging to none other than Greg Glitter, patron saint of the brand’s Moon Rocks flavor — yep, the chocolate bar with popping candy folded in). Then it’s up to you and your crew to solve puzzles in search of cosmic cacao, navigating through the ghostly garden of a haunted planet.

What parents should know

Unlike haunted houses filled with jump scares, this experience is meant to be engaging and fun rather than terrifying. That said, the puzzles are designed to be challenging, so the experience is recommended for kids ages 10 and older (but bring home some chocolate for everyone to enjoy!). The sweet reward for solving the puzzles might just be some cosmic chocolate.

Seattle Chocolate Company rebranded as Maeve

If you’re hoping to take extra chocolate home, the flagship store won’t disappoint. But those who have visited the factory before may notice things look a little different this year. This past spring, the company rebranded as Maeve, highlighting its mission as a woman-owned company with ethical and sustainable practices. You can still expect to find the meltaway bonbons and chocolate bars the company is known for, in both classic and seasonal flavors, wrapped in bright colors with bold illustrations. The company also has a fine chocolate line, Jcoco, that uses a percentage of its net profits to support cacao farmers in Peru.

Build your own box of bonbons or grab a few truffle bars to take with you. And don’t forget to snap an Instagram-worthy photo in front of the shop’s colorful backdrop before you go.
