Hope you are enjoying the glorious autumn sunshine. Here are a few fun stories to further brighten your week.

Local food news

🍽The local restaurant scene is looking up! The recent New York Times best restaurant list featured two PNW eateries. Off Alley, located in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood, and Matia, on Orcas Island, both snagged coveted spots on the list of top 50 restaurants in America. Book your table (for next year) now.

🍫 Seattle Chocolate is the place to be this October. If you’ve ever dreamed of making chocolate your profession (raising hand), head over to the company’s career day on Saturday, Oct. 8. It’s free and open to youth ages 14–18. The event will include hands-on activities, a look into the chocolate factory, plus the opportunity to hear from female leaders, including the CEO. The company is also hosting its haunted chocolate factory tours later this month. Pro tip: Get your tickets now.

Flying things

☄Want to see something very cool? NASA crashed a small spacecraft into an asteroid to see if the bump could impact the asteroid’s orbit. It was the first test of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the world’s first planetary defense technology. You can watch a time-lapse recording of the last few moments before impact on Youtube.

✈️Do you love to travel but feel torn about the environmental impacts of flying? Well, last week we got a little closer to solving that dilemma. A groundbreaking all-electric airplane took its first test flight right here in Washington.

Corny shenanigans this fall

🌽Are you a lover of maize mazes?  If so, you’ll want to check out the world’s largest corn maze at Richardson Farm in Illinois. This 10-mile corn maze is a tribute to James Bond this year, with a very impressive design. If you are looking for a slightly smaller, closer-to-home corn maze, give these a try.
🐻And last, but definitely not least, Fat Bear Week is back! Celebrate the chonky bears and the healthy ecosystem at Katmai National Park with this fun annual tradition. This year’s contestants will be announced on Oct. 3. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite! See the beary impressive winners from previous years in the hall of champions
