Every year, SAM celebrates the colorful and culturally rich traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This annual celebration, hosted in partnership with renowned Oaxacan artist Fulgencio Lazo and El Consulado de México in Seattle, is a joyful tribute to life and a beautiful way to honor the memory of our loved ones who have passed away. We invite you to be a part of this event that blends art, music, dance, and creativity, for all ages.

Event Highlights

Take an up-close look at this year's tapete created by the talented Oaxacan artist Fulgencio Lazo and his team of volunteers. This intricate sand painting reflects the spirit and essence of Día de los Muertos, showcasing the beauty of life and the acceptance of death as a natural part of it.

A soul-stirring musical performance by La Banda Gozona will infuse the celebration with the spirit of Día de los Muertos, creating an immersive experience for everyone!

Witness enchanting dances performed by Grupo Cultural Oaxaqueño, a talented troupe that will bring the vibrant traditions of Oaxaca to life. Their colorful and energetic performances will have you dancing along.

Get your creative juices flowing with engaging art-making activities suitable for all ages. Join visual artist and printmaker Yoshi Nakagawa to create a Día de los Muertos inspired print.

The 3rd floor galleries will remain open during this event. Enjoy a serene moment during the event while visiting the art on view.
