Join us on December 13 to celebrate 50 years since the Douglass-Truth Branch’s community-led renaming! Our celebration includes tours, performances, refreshments and much more.
Initially opened as the Henry L. Yesler Library in 1914, the Douglass-Truth Branch was renamed through a community-led process in 1975. Its hyphenated name honors the legacy of two prominent Black abolitionists, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, and affirms the branch’s connection to its home community, the Central District.
Douglass-Truth Branch also houses our African American Collection, one of the largest collections of African American literature and history on the West Coast. The collection features more than 10,000 items, including biographies, magazines, literature, music and films.
Our celebration will include presentations and tours of the branch and the African American Collection, plus performances, refreshments, and opportunities to build community and envision Douglass-Truth’s next 50 years and beyond.
