Secular Humanistic Reverse Tashlikh Cleanup Event

Sunday, Sept. 6 @ 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Did you know that the Jewish community has their own unique calendar, independent of the Gregorian calendar? Meet Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year! This year, it falls in early September.

A staple of the Jewish New Year is the “tashlikh” ritual, which is typically observed by casting off one’s “sins”, mistakes or bad habits from the previous year into a moving body of water in the form of small, dissolvable objects like strips of paper or breadcrumbs. Think of it as a physical signifier of one’s commitment to their New Year’s resolution!

In response to this tradition, the more modern “reversed” tashlikh ritual is the practice of, instead, removing human “sins” from the water.

So come join the Circle ahead of the Jewish New Year for a small waterfront cleanup event in a public park in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle on Sunday, September 6! At the end of the event, we’ll weigh all the trash we collected and report it to Repair The Sea, as part of a worldwide mitzvah (good deed)!

All ages and abilities are welcome!
