SUMM Studio: DIY Tessellations

Saturday, Aug. 22 @ 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.

SUMM Studio is a hands-on, creative math experience for families and learners of all ages, with 90-minute sessions every Saturday and Sunday. Led by an educator from the Seattle Universal Math Museum, sessions uncover the mathematics behind art and design, including geometry, and symmetry. No prior math or art experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore. Families and individuals alike are invited to slow down, collaborate, and experience math as creative, playful, and accessible. All materials are provided.

Explore the art of repeating patterns in this hands-on class all about tessellations! Participants will design and create their own interlocking shapes that fit together perfectly without gaps or overlaps. Through cutting, tracing, and experimenting, discover how transformations like translation, rotation, and reflection bring these patterns to life. Along the way, explore the math behind symmetry, geometry, and spatial reasoning. Perfect for creative thinkers of all ages, this class blends art, design, and mathematics into a colorful and engaging experience!
