The Studio at SAM

Museums aren’t just places to look at art. They’re places to experience it together.

This fall, we’re transforming the fourth floor into an open studio where something new is always happening. Step inside and make yourself at home: watch artists at work, ask questions, and create alongside them in our print shop. Gather for music, artist talks, family activities, and hands-on art making, or just settle into the lounge and take it all in.

Every visit offers something new. As artists and visitors create throughout the season, the gallery transforms—inviting you to return, discover what’s changed, and become part of the story.

What to know
Activations and events take place October 1, 2026–January 10, 2027, on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Studio at SAM is on the fourth floor of the Seattle Art Museum and features the print shop, the lounge, and a reading nook with a book list from Seattle Public Library.

The print shop is a chance to take part in the printmaking process using an original design by one of our featured artists. Through this hands-on experience, visitors can meet the artist and learn about their work and techniques, and run a print to take home. Come back each month to engage with a new artist and create a new print to take home!

Self-guided printmaking is always available at the print shop. Respond to a letterpress prompt using artist-designed stamps, ink, and markers, then add your work on our collective print wall or take it home with you. Created in partnership with Partners in Print.

The lounge is activated with weekly events.

Second Thursdays of the month are Member Nights. SAM members get a free drink and the Studio all to themselves.

All events are first-come, first-served and included with admission. Drop in and enjoy!
