Have a Look at Coding (HAL) with Tacoma Public Library

Calendar/Event Details

Have a Look at Coding (HAL) is now a virtual meeting every Saturday for Kids and Teens. It is an expanded version of the Digital Media Lab’s popular Kids Code Club, now in its fifth year. It builds upon a student’s innate interest in gaming and computer technologies. Students will focus on core areas of computer programming in a self-paced, supportive environment.

For Kids ages 8-12, HAL offers guided learning and individual exploration using Scratch! and other web-based tools. Children will develop familiarity with general syntax and logical operations. Drawing from a library containing many thousands of projects, kids become aware of the broad scope of coding disciplines, through ideas and projects available online.

For teens, HAL delves deeper into the nuts and bolts of computer programming with a focus on the development of virtual reality environments. Core topics include graphics and game design, software engineering, web-enabled languages such as HTML/CSS and javascript, Unity, and software development using open-source and conventional operating systems.

This program is supported by the active involvement and participation of parents, mentors and volunteers. If you’re interested in guiding young minds towards a future in coding please contact jhargis@tacomalibrary.org.

Attendees should download and install Discord (https://discord.com/) prior to their first meeting. For more information and to test your connection ahead of time please send an email to jhargis@tacomalibrary.org.
