The Space Gal Brings Science — And a Little Slime — to Seattle

Magnetic space slime, unpoppable bubbles and alien hovercrafts are all coming to Seattle, courtesy of Emily Calandrelli, aka “The Space Gal.” Calandrelli is bringing her wonderfully weird family-friendly science show to The Museum of Flight on Sept. 12. The night before, she’ll take part in a fireside chat for adult audiences on women in STEM and the importance of diversity in science, part of the Beyond the Horizon speaker series.

Calandrelli is an MIT engineer and an Emmy-nominated TV host who made a suborbital flight to space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard space vehicle in 2024. She has built a career around making sophisticated science fun and accessible for kids, including as host and co-executive producer of Netflix’s popular “Emily’s Wonder Lab.” She has also written several books for children. Her family-friendly 45-minute show, Emily’s Science Lab Live, will feature experiments from her new book, “Stay Curious and Keep Exploring.” The program is free with museum admission. After the show, Calandrelli will sign books — but only those bought at The Museum of Flight. The show starts at 11 a.m., and doors open 30 minutes beforehand. Parents should expect crowds.

Calandrelli is also an advocate for expanding access to careers in STEM. At the Sept. 11 fireside chat, she’ll discuss women in STEM and the importance of diversity, drawing on her own experience in engineering and aerospace. A separately-ticketed VIP meet and greet begins at 6 p.m., followed by the fireside chat at 7 p.m., and a book signing at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets: 

• Fireside chat: $60, general; $50, museum members for the fireside chat and book signing; VIP meet and greet add-on $20 (subject to availability). 
• Emily’s Science Lab Live: Free with museum admission. Museum tickets can be purchased ahead of time online or in person at the museum. $26 for adults; $22 for seniors; $18 for children ages 5–17; and free for children ages 4 and younger. Discounts are available for military personnel, veterans, AAA members and Boeing employees. Visitors can also purchase a discounted return ticket valid within seven days of the original visit.
