Editor's note: Due to facility upgrades, the downtown Main Library is closed with an expected reopening date in spring 2024. Check the website for updates.

Find it: 765 S. 84th St., Tacoma

While Tacoma Public Library’s downtown flagship library — which earned a flurry of press when Michelle Obama stopped by to chat with a local book club — is worth a visit if you happen to be downtown, the Fern Hill branch library has its own appeal. Located on Tacoma’s east side in the charming Fern Hill neighborhood, the branch boasts a robust and colorful children’s section, with wooden toys and a dollhouse.

Day trip: Eat lunch at nearby farm-to-table restaurant Tibbitts@FernHill or explore Charlotte’s Blueberry Park, slated to get a new playground this summer.
