Have I been stocking up on candy and spooky décor now that October has arrived? You bet I have. I’ve also been compiling a list of ways to treat the whole family to fall fun! From Halloween haunts to a new season of children’s theater, Oktoberfest delights, and harvest and salmon fests — there’s plenty to fill these crisp, autumn days.

1. Treat your crew to a frighteningly good time at the final Wild Waves’ Fright Fest as the theme park prepares to close its doors forever. Thrill seekers of all ages will have a good time with options for two sizes of scares: terrifying and tot-friendly! Family-focused Booville runs Saturday–Sunday, Sept. 26–Nov. 1. Frights by Night take place Friday–Sunday, Oct. 2–Nov. 1. Admission is $41.99–$69.99, with discounts available online.

2. Seattle Children’s Theatre’s season opener, “Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster,” makes for a fun outing during the Halloween season. Tots will delight in this non-scary monster tale based on a popular Mo Willems book. Tickets are $20 and up for performances on select dates Oct. 1–Nov. 1.

3. Bluey and the Heelers return to Seattle in “Bluey’s Big Play” at The 5th Avenue Theatre. Based on the popular children’s series and brought to the stage as life-sized puppets, this theatrical production features an original story by the show creators and runs for 50 minutes with no intermission. Bring the whole family Oct. 2–4, tickets $55.10 and up.

4. Indulge in Bavarian delights like brats, giant pretzels and beer (for the adults) at an Oktoberfest in West Seattle the whole family will enjoy. (Dogs are welcome too!) Admission is free with food and beverage for purchase. Head over to Ounces Taproom and Beer Garden Friday–Sunday, Oct. 2–4. Pro tip: Bring the kids on Sunday when special activities including a Kids Stein Hoist Competition are planned.

5. You won’t have to travel far for seasonal farm fun — trot on over to Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue for wagon rides, barnyard animals, kids crafts and fun with pumpkins. Admission is free; some activities require a fee. See you at the big white barn on Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

6. Enter a world of mythical creatures at this year’s Lacy Children’s Day. Enjoy crafts, games, inflatables and other fun activities. Bring the whole crew to Huntamer Park on Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. for a memorable day of magical entertainment. Free.

7. Head to downtown Issaquah to make your way upstream with our local salmon and celebrate their spawning journey at Issaquah Salmon Days. Watch the community parade, enjoy music, kids games, inflatables, salmon hatchery tours, dock dogs and more. Be there for “Stars, Stripes & Salmon”, Saturday–Sunday, Oct. 3–4, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

8. It’s time to make tracks! October marks your last chance of the season to hop aboard a mini train for a free ride. Bring your little conductors to Port Orchard’s South Kitsap Regional Park on Saturday, Oct. 10 and 24 or make your way to beautiful Skykomish and ride the rails as many times as you’d like at the Great Northern and Cascade Railway, Saturdays, Oct. 3–31. Be sure to double check schedules and confirm trains are running before heading out!

9. Pluck the pumpkin of your dreams by consulting our roundup of great local pumpkin patches., As luck would have it, our guide also highlights the best farms for harvest fun, from hayrides to corn mazes throughout Puget Sound. Grab your boots and shears and get picking! Through Oct. 31.

10. Young readers of all ages can meet their favorite authors, get books signed, join a story time and discover new titles at the Bigfoot Kids’ Book Festival. Held at the Redmond Senior Community Center, Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. It’s the perfect place to find a new favorite read! Free.

11. Hunt for a new batch of Dambo Trolls, the whimsical giant structures made from upcycled materials by artist Thomas Dambo, starting Oct. 15. Twelve new trolls are gracing us with their monumental presence as part of a traveling exhibition, “Trolls: A Field Study.” Eight trolls will be hosted at Northwest Trek and four at Point Defiance Zoo. Searching for these friendly giants is included with admission through Jan. 24, 2027.

12. Our Parentmap Talks series welcomes pediatric surgeon and New York Times bestselling author, Dr. Dana Suskind to help parents navigate the challenges of raising kids in the age of AI and maintaining human connection. 14. The Seattle Symphony hosts a free open house at Benaroya Hall and all are invited to join an immersive day of music, performances, storytelling (including a special orchestral performance with indie folk group The Head and the Heart) and more.
