The setting: The Index Cabins are set on a 4.5-acre private forest by the Skykomish River. There’s plenty of room to roam, and a grass field perfect for frolicking. Thrill-seeking families love it here — arrangements can be made to visit the 225-foot zip line and ATV track in the adventure park. But if you’re after a peaceful, restorative retreat, you’ll find that here too.

Rental info: Seven unique cabins sit on the property, ranging in size and amenities. The newest, a luxury A-frame cabin, offers multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a 75-inch TV, and a hot tub on the back patio. Or you can choose to stay in repurposed shipping containers, a modern tree house cabin, a fishing cabin or a tiny home. Several of the cabin rentals have hot tubs, and all guests on the property have access to the sauna and cold plunge.

Nearby things to do: The drive out (and back!) will likely take you through Monroe, Sultan and Gold Bar with family-friendly diners and fun pit stops along the way. Index is a quaint little town with scenic views, plus a general store for any last-minute essentials. If you want to spend the day hiking, Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Serene are among the options nearby. The Outdoor Adventure Center in Index offers kayak and e-bike rentals for extra adventure. But many families find they just want to stay and enjoy the cabins, surrounding forest and river.

There are Postcard Cabins in Skagit Valley and near Mount Adams, both of which are now part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Outdoor Collection. The cabins are set in private woods just two hours outside big cities (Seattle and Portland) to encourage guests to reconnect with nature.

Each cabin has a queen bed or bunk beds, a bathroom with a shower, and a kitchen with a two-burner stove and mini-fridge. Reservations now include a destination fee, which covers three bundles of firewood, a s’mores kit, snacks and beverages. Dogs are welcome for an additional fee (and the cabin will be stocked with essentials, such as a dog bowl and a tie-out cable, for their stay). Bonus: Since Marriott Bonvoy acquired Postcard Cabins this year, families can now book with points.
