I’m one of those selfish moms. I refuse to sit through an episode of iCarly or Beyblade, I will not come check out your Zen Garden as long as there are zombies involved and I’m not interested in spending time in a mind-bendingly loud pizza place that features singing puppets. I love my kids and I want to spend lots and lots of time with them (ok, maybe just lots) but I want to blend my worlds — have fun with the kids while doing something we all think is cool.

So imagine my delight when one of my favorite watering holes came up with this brilliant idea. The Sunset Tavern in Ballard now offers Family Movie Night. Once a month, usually on the first Monday of the month (though this month it's on March 12), the Sunset pulls down the screen, loads up a table with pepperoni and plain cheese pizza slices and sets up a few rows of chairs. Kids get all-you-can-eat pizza for $5 — that’s less than the price of a movie ticket at a theatre. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the movie starts 6 p.m.

Did I mention I’m a selfish mom? I don’t do bad pizza, so if I want to eat too, we only go where it’s tasty. The Flying Squirrel Pizza Co. at the Sunset is really one of my favorite pizzas in town. The flavor combos they come up with are always spot-on and their crust is a perfect chewy-crunchy deliciousness. It just so happens that the daily kid-friendly happy hour goes from 5 to 7 p.m. and that means $1 off microbrews and well drinks if you are so inclined, and $3 off whole pizza pies. Mama’s happy, so, well, you know.

The next movie night is tonight, Monday March 12. What's playing? The Last Unicorn. The details are on Sunset's Facebook events page.
