Local family farms produce an astounding selection of delicious heirloom apple varieties, many of which can only be found at a farmers market or on the farm: Smokehouse, Macoun, Swiss Arlett, Sunrise, Tsugaru, Winter Banana, Pirus, Sweet 16, Bramley’s Seedling, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Nickajack, Empire, Elstar, Prairie Spy…these are just a few of the many unusual and delicious varieties to look for on farmers market tables.
